Chapter 11 - MARGARET ASKED FOR FORGIVENESS

Three years after the chain, Margaret requested a therapeutic letter to Sophie.
First draft:
I did what I thought was necessary because your mother lied—
Rejected.
Second:
I was grieving your grandfather and confused—
Rejected.
Third:
Sophie, I chained you because I was angry and wanted control. I told myself you had to earn your place. That was wrong. You did nothing to deserve it.
Better.
Then:
I also used a secret about your biology to hurt you even though you were the one person least responsible for it.
That was the first Margaret sentence I believed.
We allowed Sophie to read it with her therapist.
