Chapter 14 - MARGARET SAW SOPHIE AGAIN

Sophie was twelve when she chose one supervised meeting.

Not because I pushed.

Not because Margaret earned automatic access.

Because Sophie wanted to ask questions.

Margaret looked older.

She did not reach for her.

“Hi, Sophie.”

“Hi.”

Then Sophie asked:

“Did you chain Chloe?”

“No.”

“Madison?”

“No.”

“Why me?”

Margaret took a long time.

“Because I thought you were the easiest person to punish without losing everyone else.”

The therapist remained silent.

Sophie’s face hardened.

“That’s awful.”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me?”

Margaret cried.

“Yes.”

Sophie immediately asked:

“Then why wasn’t love enough?”

Margaret had no quick answer.

Finally:

“Because I treated love like ownership.”

I looked at her.

That was probably the clearest thing therapy had taught her.

Sophie said:

“I don’t want you alone with me.”

“Okay.”

“Maybe birthdays if Mom says yes.”

“Okay.”

No hug.

May you like

Boundary first.

Relationship maybe later.
