When Sophie was eleven, Michael remarried.
His wife, Julia, was kind.

Later she asked him:
“Do you tell Julia about Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
“Does she think it’s weird?”

Sophie laughed.

“If we did another DNA test, would it still say you’re not my biological dad?”
“Yes.”
“Does that bother you?”
Michael thought.
“Sometimes.”
Sophie looked surprised.
He continued.
“But feeling hurt doesn’t change what I choose.”
