The original reason I ordered testing did not disappear inside the family scandal.
Cardiac genetics.
Thomas had carried a pathogenic variant associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Because Sophie was biologically his child rather than grandchild, her probability of inheriting it was higher than we had understood.
She tested positive for the variant.
That terrified me.
But genetics is not destiny.
Her pediatric cardiologist found no current structural heart disease.
Regular monitoring.
Exercise guidance.
Symptom awareness.
No dramatic prediction.
No certainty she would develop severe disease.
The biological truth had a practical benefit.
We could care for her accurately.
That became one reason I was eventually grateful we discovered everything.
