Rachel had not known the fertility secret.
But she had known Margaret treated Sophie differently.
That mattered.
I confronted her.
“You left her downstairs.”
“I know.”
“You knew Mom was angry with her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she made Sophie clean.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you stop it?”
Rachel cried.
“Because Mom always made everything about respect.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“I thought Sophie was being asked to help.”
“While Chloe and Madison played?”
Silence.
There it was.
Rachel had normalized hierarchy because her children benefited from it.
Not intentionally.
Comfortably.
That distinction did not absolve her.
She apologized to Sophie later.
Not:
I’m sorry Grandma upset you.
Specific:
“I saw Grandma treating you differently and I didn’t ask enough questions because my children weren’t the ones being hurt.”
Sophie asked:
“Would you now?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Would you stop her?”
“Yes.”
That mattered more than tears.
Rachel changed the rules for Chloe and Madison too.
No unsupervised visits with Margaret.
