Chapter 13 - SOPHIE CHOSE MICHAEL
Sophie was twelve when she asked:
“Could Grandpa Thomas legally have been my father?”
The question was complicated.
We explained biological contribution and legal parenthood separately.
Michael had been married to me at her birth.
Named father.
Raised her.
No one sought to disestablish his parental role.
Thomas was deceased.
No one wanted to create a legal fiction that replaced the man who had actually parented her.
Sophie listened.
Then:
“Good.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael is Dad.”
Michael looked down.
She continued:
“Grandpa can be the weird DNA part.”
Michael laughed.
That phrase survived.
Weird DNA part.
At thirteen, she used it with doctors.
At fourteen, she hated it and started saying “biological progenitor.”
Teenagers upgrade vocabulary before wisdom.
Michael remained Dad.
Biology did not erase grief over exclusion.
