Chapter 4 - Thomas Reed

Thomas agreed to meet only after Rachel threatened to subpoena him.
My goal was to understand how he became Dany’s father without my knowledge.
He looked familiar the moment he entered the conference room.
Not his face.
His eyes.
Dany’s eyes.
Thomas was forty-three.
He said he met me five years earlier at a charity fundraiser.
I remembered a man named Tom.
We talked.
Had drinks.
One night.
Then I never heard from him again.
I had been separated from Daniel at the time.
Weeks later Daniel came back, apologized, and we tried again.
When I discovered I was pregnant, the dates were close.
I assumed Daniel was the father.
Thomas said Margaret contacted him before I could.
“She told me you wanted no contact.”
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
He said Margaret threatened to expose private financial trouble from his past if he approached me.
Why would she care?
Because Thomas was not merely Eleanor’s stepson.
His father, Harold Reed, had married Eleanor after my birth.
Harold owned Reed Foods, a regional distribution company.
When he died, his trust passed control to Eleanor for life.
Then to Eleanor’s biological descendants.
That meant me.
Not Margaret.
Margaret was Eleanor’s daughter too, but from an earlier relationship?
Thomas clarified.
Margaret was not Eleanor’s biological daughter.
She was Harold’s daughter from his first marriage.
Eleanor was her stepmother.
That changed everything again.
Margaret raised me as her daughter because legally I was her stepsister.
Biologically, I was Eleanor’s only child.
Chelsea was Margaret’s biological daughter.
I was never Chelsea’s sister by blood.
I was her aunt by marriage structure.
Messy.
But legally important.
Harold’s trust passed through Eleanor’s biological line.
Me.
Then Dany.
Margaret had no blood claim.
She only controlled assets while everyone believed she was Eleanor’s daughter and I was hers.
The false family tree kept her in power.
Thomas explained something worse.
He was Harold’s son from the same first marriage as Margaret.
Margaret’s biological brother.
That made Thomas my stepbrother legally, but not biologically.
No blood relation.
Dany was legitimate genetically.
But the trust considered Thomas part of Harold’s bloodline and me part of Eleanor’s.
Our child united both lines.
Dany did not just inherit one branch.
He triggered full consolidation of Reed Foods voting control.
That was why Margaret panicked when he was born.
Carter did not trigger anything.
Dany did.
Her favoritism toward Carter had always looked emotional.
Now it looked strategic.
She elevated Carter publicly while degrading Dany so no one would suspect which child actually mattered financially.
Then Thomas said he had been visiting Eleanor because she finally contacted him two years ago.
She told him Margaret was moving Reed trust assets into Chelsea’s name.
Thomas began gathering evidence.
Why not tell me?
Eleanor was afraid Margaret would use Dany against me.
Then Thomas handed over one letter.
From Eleanor.
If Lucy learns the truth before the trust records are secured, Margaret will provoke her into taking Dany away from the family. That gives Margaret the excuse she needs to petition.
That was exactly what happened at the BBQ.
Margaret had planned my reaction.
Then Thomas revealed the “real grandchild” phrase.
Margaret had used it for years inside the family.
Not because Carter was more real.
Because she wanted everyone to believe Carter was the heir.
I thought Margaret favored Carter out of love—but the trust records showed she had been using him as camouflage while quietly tracking Dany as the true successor.

**Dany’s birth united both sides of the Reed family trust, making a four-year-old boy the legal trigger for assets Margaret had controlled for decades.**
*The transfer records showed Margaret had already moved part of those assets before Dany was old enough to speak.*
