Chapter 7 - The Camera Above the Grill
Sarah remembered a security camera mounted under Margaret’s patio roof.
My goal was to get the full footage before Victor erased it.
Margaret’s home system stored video locally for seven days.
Thomas obtained an emergency preservation order Sunday morning.
Victor objected.
Too late.
Police secured the recorder.
The backyard footage showed everything.
Margaret moving the fries away from Dany.
Chelsea deliberately handing fries to Carter.
The insults.
My reaction.
The plate hitting Chelsea.
Bad for me.
But the camera also captured what happened before guests arrived.
Margaret and Chelsea stood beside the grill.
Margaret said:
“Lucy has to be the one who leaves.”
Chelsea:
“And if she just ignores us?”
Margaret:
“Bring up Dany. She never ignores that.”
Then Victor entered the frame.
He handed Margaret a folder.
“Once she reacts, call me. We file before Eleanor can get in front of a judge.”
There it was.
The entire setup.
My retaliation no longer looked like unexplained aggression.
It looked provoked.
Still not ideal.
But contextualized.
Then the footage showed something none of us expected.
Carter was standing behind the patio door.
Listening.
Five years old.
He heard his grandmother planning to use Dany.
Later, before the confrontation, Carter took fries from his own plate and tried to hand them to Dany under the table.
Margaret stopped him.
That broke my heart.
The “favorite grandchild” was not the enemy.
He was another child inside Margaret’s manipulation.
Then Chelsea came to Sarah’s house.
No lawyer.
No mother.
She looked terrible.
Ketchup stains were gone.
Confidence too.
She admitted Margaret told her the family trust would disappear if I “turned Dany against them.”
Chelsea believed I was trying to take money from Carter.
Margaret told her Dany had no real claim.
She wanted Chelsea angry.
Competitive.
Useful.
Then Chelsea handed over her phone.
Messages showed Victor had coached her on what to say after the BBQ.
VICTOR:
Emphasize Lucy’s instability. Say she attacked without warning.
Chelsea never sent the statement.
Why?
“Because Carter asked me why Grandma wanted Dany to disappear.”
That question broke her.
She began checking old files.
She found a letter hidden in Margaret’s desk.
From Eleanor.
Written three years earlier.
Stop using Chelsea and Carter to punish Lucy. The trust is not theirs to lose.
Chelsea finally understood she had been lied to.
Then she revealed a second camera.
Her phone had been recording on the table during the argument.
Not intentionally.
She had been filming Carter near the grill before the confrontation and forgot to stop.
The audio captured Margaret whispering to Victor after I left:
“She took the bait.”
Victor replied:
“Good. Now we separate Lucy from Dany before Eleanor gets standing.”
That was stronger than the security footage.
Direct intent.
Then Victor said something else.
“Once we have Dany, Thomas signs.”
Thomas froze.
“Signs what?”
Victor’s voice:
“The Reed consolidation waiver.”
Thomas had never seen such a document.
If he signed away Dany’s claim, Margaret could preserve the asset transfers.
I thought the custody case was about controlling me—but Dany was only leverage to force Thomas into surrendering the trust.
