Chapter 5 - The Missing Shares

Reed Foods was not a giant corporation.

But its land holdings were worth more than anyone in my family ever admitted.

My goal was to find out what Margaret moved.

The trust held distribution warehouses, farmland, and commercial property across Illinois.

Eleanor controlled voting rights for life.

But Margaret had served as “family administrator” because everyone believed Eleanor was dead.

That was the trick.

If Eleanor were alive, Margaret’s administrative authority was invalid.

Every transfer she approved after the fake death could be challenged.

Rachel found three major moves.

A warehouse transferred to Chelsea.

Farmland placed in Carter’s custodial trust.

A commercial property mortgaged to fund Margaret’s investments.

Total value: nearly eleven million dollars.

Chelsea said she knew nothing.

I did not believe her.

Then she produced documents showing she truly thought the warehouse was a gift from Margaret.

She had signed without asking where it came from.

Weakness.

Not innocence.

But not full conspiracy.

Then Carter’s trust showed another issue.

Custodian: Victor Hale.

Margaret’s lawyer.

Victor had moved money out of the account twice.

One payment went to a private investigator.

The investigator had followed me for three years.

Photos of Dany’s daycare.

My apartment.

Thomas’s visits to Eleanor.

Margaret knew everything.

Then another payment went to Daniel Pierce.

My ex.

The man I thought was Dany’s father.

He had received $60,000.

I called him.

He denied knowing why.

Then I showed him the transfer.

He stopped talking.

Finally he admitted Margaret paid him to sign an acknowledgment that he believed he was Dany’s father.

Why would that matter?

Because as long as Daniel appeared to be the father, Thomas remained hidden.

The Reed trust stayed asleep.

Dany looked like an ordinary Carter-family grandchild.

Margaret had paid to preserve the false paternity.

Daniel took the money.

He told himself Dany was probably his anyway.

Then the original DNA test could have corrected everything.

Margaret buried it.

Cause and effect became clear.

Dany was born.

Margaret secretly tested him.

Discovered Thomas was the father.

Realized the trust would consolidate.

Paid Daniel to stay on the birth certificate.

Kept Eleanor hidden.

Moved trust assets.

Then provoked me into a family rupture before I could learn the truth.

That was the whole architecture.

But one question remained.

Why now?

Why provoke me at the BBQ after four years of successfully hiding everything?

Thomas answered.

Eleanor had filed a petition to restore legal control of the trust.

Hearing date: next week.

Margaret was running out of time.

She needed custody leverage over Dany before Eleanor appeared in court.

Then Rachel found the filing.

Eleanor Reed v. Margaret Carter.

Restoration of trust authority.

The case had been sealed.

Margaret knew the hearing would expose the fake death.

The BBQ was not random timing.

It was the final weekend before court.

I thought Margaret’s cruelty had finally gone too far by accident—but she had chosen that exact day because she needed me angry, gone, and legally vulnerable before Eleanor returned.

**The sealed hearing was scheduled for Monday morning, and Eleanor intended to walk into court alive after twelve years of being legally dead.**

*What happened before that hearing explained why Margaret was willing to risk everything at a backyard BBQ.*
