Chapter 6 - Why Eleanor Disappeared

Eleanor had not died.

My goal was to understand why she allowed everyone to believe she had.

Thomas found her that night at a motel near O’Hare.

Margaret had driven her there.

No kidnapping.

No chains.

Just pressure.

Eleanor agreed to come with us.

At Sarah’s house, she looked smaller than I remembered from childhood.

Older.

But unmistakably alive.

I did not hug her.

Not yet.

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

She cried.

Then answered.

Because Harold’s death exposed tax fraud inside Reed Foods.

Victor Hale discovered irregular trust withdrawals made by Harold before he died.

Margaret threatened to report Eleanor as complicit unless she signed temporary control to Margaret.

Eleanor did.

Then Margaret went further.

She created a death affidavit through a corrupt funeral director.

Not a real death certificate.

Enough internal paperwork to convince family, banks, and private trustees.

Eleanor disappeared under the name Ellen Reed.

She believed staying gone protected me from being pulled into the financial mess.

Again.

Protection through lies.

I was tired of that word.

Then Eleanor told me the deeper reason.

Margaret had always resented me.

Not because I was a difficult child.

Because Harold loved me.

He had married Eleanor when I was a baby.

He treated me as his daughter.

Margaret, already in her twenties, saw me as another person taking what she believed belonged to her.

When Harold amended the trust to include Eleanor’s biological descendants, Margaret saw me as a future threat.

Then Dany was born to Thomas.

That united Harold’s son and Eleanor’s daughter.

Dany represented everything Margaret feared losing.

Why did she not simply expose Thomas as the father and challenge the trust?

Because the trust language was clear.

Dany’s claim was stronger.

Her only strategy was to hide him inside a false family structure until she could drain assets.

Then Eleanor showed me something.

A handwritten memo from Harold.

If Lucy ever has a child with Thomas, voting control passes directly to that child at age twenty-five, with Lucy as interim trustee.

Harold had anticipated the possibility.

Why?

Because he once hoped Thomas and I would meet as adults.

Not romantically.

He simply knew both families moved in the same circles.

The clause was broad estate planning.

Margaret interpreted it as a threat.

Then Eleanor revealed why she called me before the BBQ.

She had overheard Margaret and Victor planning.

Victor said:

“If Lucy leaves angry, we file Monday morning before Eleanor appears.”

File what?

An emergency petition alleging I was alienating Dany from his family and behaving violently.

The BBQ was staged to generate witnesses.

Margaret took the fries.

Chelsea insulted Dany.

They expected me to explode.

I did.

The plate in Chelsea’s face gave them exactly what they wanted.

My stomach dropped.

They had video.

Half the backyard had phones out.

Margaret could now show a judge me physically attacking Chelsea.

The family cruelty was bait.

I took it.

Then Eleanor said one more thing.

“Chelsea knew there would be a confrontation.”

I looked at her.

“Did she know why?”

“No.”

She was told only to provoke me.

That mattered.

Chelsea was involved.

But maybe not in the trust conspiracy.

Then Sarah found a message Chelsea had sent Margaret before the party.

CHELSEA:

How far do you want me to push her?

MARGARET:

Enough that she leaves with the boy.

I thought Chelsea’s cruelty was spontaneous loyalty to our mother—but the message proved it was rehearsed.

**The BBQ humiliation was staged to manufacture a custody narrative, and my retaliation gave Margaret the video she planned to use in court.**

*The only way to survive Monday’s hearing was to find the part of the backyard footage Margaret did not know existed.*
