Chapter 14 - Margaret's Last Offer

Margaret asked to meet Ethan one final time before the financial claims moved forward.

He wanted me there.

I went.

She offered repayment.

Sale of the lake property.

Restitution to the company.

Correction of the baby's account.

All of it.

But there was a condition.

“Keep the staircase incident private.”

I stared at her.

There it was.

Money in exchange for silence.

Again.

Ethan answered before I could.

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You'd destroy your mother?”

“You kicked Claire while she was carrying my daughter.”

“I lost control for one second.”

“And then you lied.”

He pushed the proposed agreement back.

“Financial repayment doesn't purchase forgiveness.”

Margaret looked at me.

“What do you want?”

Months earlier, I might have said punishment.

Now I knew better.

“I want you to stop deciding what consequences everyone else is allowed to give you.”

I stood.

The financial issues would proceed through the appropriate channels.

The assault and medical evidence would remain documented and handled separately.

My marriage would be decided by me and Ethan, not Margaret.

And our daughter would never be used as leverage between generations.

Margaret's voice broke.

“Ethan.”

He stopped at the door.

She waited for him to turn around.

He did.

“I love you, Mom.”

Hope flashed across her face.

Then he finished.

“But I'm not protecting you from this.”

We walked out together.

Not reconciled.

Not repaired.

Just finally standing on the same side of one truth.

The next morning, the formal process began.

Margaret could no longer stop it.
