Chapter 8 - I Left Our House

I didn't go back after the hospital.

I moved into a furnished rental near Natalie.

Not forever.

Long enough to make one thing clear.

Marriage couldn't continue as if the staircase were merely a bad family argument.

Ethan asked me not to leave.

I did anyway.

Then I separated my personal finances where legally appropriate and refused to sign any new business authorization until the accounting review was complete.

Margaret reacted immediately.

She emailed several extended relatives saying pregnancy hormones had made me paranoid.

She claimed I'd attacked the family financially after an accidental fall.

But she didn't know the doorbell camera had captured her kick.

The camera had activated because Ethan and Margaret entered through the front door shortly before the assault and continued recording intermittent motion around the foyer and staircase area.

I preserved the original files.

No social-media post.

No family blast.

Evidence wasn't entertainment.

Ethan surprised me.

He called Margaret.

I heard only his side later.

“You're going to stop talking about Claire.”

Pause.

“No, Mom.”

Another pause.

“I saw the video.”

That apparently ended the conversation.

Then Margaret said something that frightened him enough to call me immediately.

“If Claire keeps digging, you'll lose the lake house too.”

Not “we.”

You.

Ethan had spent years believing the property was his future inheritance.

But if Margaret feared he'd lose it because of an accounting review, then perhaps the house wasn't funded the way she'd told him.

We ordered a full tracing of the purchase funds.

And that decision exposed the part of the story neither Ethan nor I had understood.
