Chapter 7 - Margaret Had Used the Same Trick Before

The deeper review didn't produce one magical document.

It produced repetition.

Margaret blurred boundaries.

Family money.

Business money.

Estate money.

Personal money.

Everything became interchangeable whenever she decided the purpose was justified.

Ethan had learned the same habit.

That was why he'd approved subcontractor payments without seeing himself as dishonest.

To him, it was temporary.

To Margaret, apparently, ownership itself was temporary whenever she needed something.

Then Natalie remembered a conversation from my baby shower.

Margaret had asked whether my father had “tied up” the baby's money.

Natalie thought it was ordinary curiosity.

Now it wasn't.

Why would Margaret care?

I checked the transfer dates.

The questionable movement from the baby's account occurred nine days after the shower.

That was clue one.

Clue two was the lake property.

Margaret had repeatedly described it to Ethan as “your inheritance.”

Yet ownership documents gave her control.

Clue three was the staircase.

I had been carrying baby clothes because I'd hidden the blue folder beneath them after noticing the signature discrepancy.

Margaret hadn't kicked me during a spontaneous argument.

She'd arrived looking for those exact papers.

But one question remained.

Why had Ethan been with her eleven minutes earlier?

I finally asked him directly.

His answer hurt.

“She told me you were planning to leave me.”

I stared at him.

“She said the financial records proved you'd been moving money and preparing to take the baby.”

“And you believed her?”

He couldn't look at me.

“For about an hour.”

Sometimes betrayal doesn't require believing a lie forever.

Sometimes an hour is enough.
