Chapter 1 - The Slap That Broke My Marriage

Margaret Carter’s hand cracked across my six-year-old daughter’s face so hard that Rose spun sideways in her light-blue princess dress.

For one second, the entire living room went silent.

Rose’s small hand flew to her cheek.

Then she started crying.

“TAKE IT OFF!” Margaret snapped, still gripping Rose by the wrist. “YOU DON’T DESERVE TO WEAR THAT DRESS!”

I was standing three feet away.

Beth was beside the fireplace.

David was sitting on the navy sofa.

At least twenty relatives, family friends, and children were scattered around the room with drinks, cake plates, and phones in their hands.

Everybody saw it.

I crossed the distance before Margaret could touch Rose again.

“Let her go.”

I pulled Rose behind me and felt her fingers clutch the back of my dark green dress.

Margaret lifted her chin.

“She needs discipline.”

Before I could answer, Beth walked directly toward me.

She smiled.

Then she spat in my face.

A few guests gasped.

The warm spray hit my cheek.

Beth didn’t even pretend to be ashamed.

“Teach your brat a lesson.”

My hand trembled as I wiped my cheek.

I didn’t look away from her.

Then I looked at my husband.

David had watched his mother strike his daughter.

He had watched his sister spit on his wife.

I expected anger.

Shock.

Anything.

Instead, he slowly stood, adjusted the sleeve of his dark navy suit, and looked at Rose as if she had embarrassed him.

“My mother should have slapped her harder.”

Something inside me became perfectly still.

Rose made a soft sound behind me.

“Mommy?”

I turned back toward Margaret.

She gave me a satisfied smile.

That smile did it.

I stepped forward and slapped her.

Once.

Fast.

Hard.

Margaret stumbled backward and fell against the edge of the sofa before dropping onto the carpet.

Beth screamed.

David rushed forward.

I moved between him and Rose.

“Try touching her again,” I said quietly. “See what happens.”

The guests were frozen.

Even the children had stopped whispering.

David stared at me as though I had become a stranger.

Maybe I had.

Because the woman who had spent eleven years swallowing insults to keep the Carter family peaceful was gone.

I reached into my handbag.

David’s expression changed before I even removed the papers.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He knew what I had.

I pulled out the thick stack of documents I had planned to discuss with him privately after the party.

Bank statements.

Trust records.

Corporate filings.

Copies of authorization forms.

And the separation agreement I had not yet decided whether to sign.

David took one nervous step toward me.

“Emily.”

I looked at the man who had just wished more pain on our daughter.

“You should have protected your daughter.”

I threw the documents onto the coffee table.

Several pages slid across the polished wood.

David looked down.

His face lost its color.

Beth’s smile disappeared.

Margaret stopped shouting.

At the top of the first page was the name of the account I had spent three weeks trying to understand.

THE ELEANOR CARTER EDUCATION TRUST FOR ROSE CARTER.

Below it were seven withdrawals totaling $684,000.

And every single one carried my authorization.

Except I had never authorized any of them.

David looked up at me.

“Where did you get these?”

I almost answered.

Then one page shifted beneath his hand.

A notarized authorization appeared underneath.

My name was typed at the bottom.

My signature was above it.

And beside my forged signature was another signature I recognized immediately.

David Carter.
