Chapter 8 - The Company With My Name

Bluebird Learning LLC had an address in Maryland.

I lived in Virginia.

I had never formed a company in either state.

The registered email was unfamiliar.

The owner name was not.

Emily Carter.

My Social Security number was attached.

My identity.

My liability.

I requested every record the bank could legally provide and submitted an identity-fraud dispute.

Then David called again.

“You contacted the bank.”

It wasn’t a question.

“They contacted you quickly.”

“You froze Rose’s trust.”

“I reported fraud.”

“You created a problem.”

“You stole from our daughter.”

“Be careful with that word.”

I stared at my notes.

“How much went to Bluebird?”

Silence.

“David?”

“You need to stop.”

“How much?”

“Emily.”

I repeated it.

“How much money did you send to the company you created in my name?”

His temper broke.

“Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars.”

I stopped breathing.

He realized what he had done.

I whispered, “Thank you.”

“Emily—”

“You just confirmed you knew.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“You knew the exact amount.”

“I know the trust accounts.”

“Yesterday you said you didn’t.”

“You’re twisting my words.”

“No. I’m finally writing them down.”

He hung up.

Five minutes later, Beth sent me a message.

You should really think before accusing people when the company paperwork has YOUR signature.

Attached were photographs.

Articles of Organization.

Tax election forms.

Bank authorization.

My signature appeared on all of them.

The forgery was good.

Very good.

Good enough that I understood how dangerous this was.

Whoever created Bluebird Learning hadn’t scribbled my name.

They had copied it carefully.

Then I saw one form dated eleven months earlier.

A witness signature appeared below mine.

BETH CARTER.

I called her.

She answered laughing.

“This should be good.”

“You witnessed my signature.”

“Yes.”

“I never signed it.”

“Prove that.”

“You just admitted you witnessed it.”

“I witnessed plenty.”

“You weren’t even with me that day.”

“Were you keeping a diary?”

My stomach tightened.

Beth wasn’t scared.

Not yet.

“You created Bluebird.”

“Your name created Bluebird.”

“Rose’s trust paid it $420,000.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t steal from your own child.”

I understood.

That was their backup plan.

If I challenged the missing money, the trail led to me.

If I fought for custody, David could say I had exploited Rose’s trust.

If I accused them publicly, they could release forged documents carrying my identity.

They hadn’t only planned to provoke me into violence.

They had built a financial case around me months earlier.

“You’ve been preparing this for almost a year.”

Beth became quiet.

Then she said, “You were never supposed to look.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

She hung up.

I stared at the phone.

That was the first true thing anyone in that family had said.

I wasn’t supposed to look.

The tax statement arriving at my house had been an accident.

The trust balance had exposed the first crack.

I checked the corporate filing date again.

Eleven months earlier.

Then the trust transfer dates.

The first payment to Bluebird occurred ten months earlier.

One month after the company was created.

I opened our family calendar.

On the date my forged signature supposedly created Bluebird Learning, I hadn’t been anywhere near Beth.

I had been in Richmond with Rose for a pediatric specialist appointment.

I had receipts.

Appointment records.

Parking records.

David had known where I was.

Because he had called twice that afternoon.

Then an email notification appeared.

A document had been shared with me through the family law firm.

David’s emergency petition had changed.

It was no longer a draft.

It had been filed.

Attached was a sworn statement claiming I had assaulted Margaret, abducted Rose from a family gathering, and misappropriated more than $400,000 from my daughter’s trust through Bluebird Learning LLC.
