Chapter 3 - One More Signature

I handed Rose to Laura Benton, the mother of one of the children attending the party.

“Can you stay with her for sixty seconds?”

Laura looked from Rose’s cheek to Margaret.

“Of course.”

I turned toward the hallway.

David stepped directly in front of me.

“No.”

That one word answered more than any confession could have.

“Move.”

“There’s nothing in that office.”

“Then you shouldn’t care if I look.”

“This is my mother’s house.”

“And somebody inside it is preparing documents with my name.”

Beth came behind him.

“Emily, you’re making a scene.”

I almost laughed.

“You spit in my face.”

A few guests exchanged looks.

Beth lowered her voice.

“You assaulted our mother.”

“Our?”

She flinched.

“Your mother.”

Margaret came toward us.

“David, call someone.”

“For what?” I asked. “To explain why you slapped a child?”

Her lips tightened.

David put a hand on my arm.

I jerked away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“Emily, listen.”

“I’ve been listening for eleven years.”

His face changed.

That hit somewhere.

But I didn’t stop.

“I listened when your mother criticized how I dressed Rose. I listened when Beth called me a gold digger. I listened when you told me every missing dinner, every closed-door meeting, every changed password was business.”

His eyes flicked toward the guests.

“Not here.”

“That sentence has protected you long enough.”

I stepped around him.

He caught my wrist.

Rose cried out behind us.

“Daddy!”

David immediately released me.

Several phones were raised now.

He saw them.

So did I.

His public mask returned.

“Fine.”

He stepped aside.

“Go embarrass yourself.”

I walked down the hallway.

Margaret’s office door was unlocked.

The room smelled of polished wood and the heavy perfume she wore every Christmas.

I crossed to the desk.

The top drawer was empty.

Beth entered behind me.

“See?”

I opened the second.

Stationery.

Envelopes.

A checkbook.

The third drawer was locked.

I looked at her.

Beth folded her arms.

“You’re done.”

Rose had said drawer.

Not which one.

I scanned the desktop.

There was a small silver key beside Margaret’s reading glasses.

Beth saw me see it.

She lunged.

I grabbed it first.

“Emily!”

I unlocked the drawer.

Inside was a blue folder.

Beth reached around me.

I pulled it out.

David appeared in the doorway.

“Put that down.”

My heartbeat became painful.

The folder carried the logo of Carter Ridge Holdings, David’s private development company.

I opened it.

The first page was titled CONSENT TO TRANSFER BENEFICIAL INTEREST.

My name appeared beneath the title.

So did Rose’s.

The document stated that I voluntarily consented to transferring certain trust-controlled assets into a family-managed holding company.

I read the amount twice.

$1,950,000.

My hands went cold.

“Rose has almost two million dollars?”

Nobody answered.

I looked at David.

“You told me the trust barely covered college.”

“It’s complicated.”

“No. Numbers are simple.”

I flipped the page.

A signature line waited at the bottom.

EMILY CARTER, PARENT AND CO-TRUSTEE.

Unsigned.

Beside it was another line.

DAVID CARTER.

Already signed.

I looked at him.

“You needed me to sign this tonight.”

“No.”

Rose appeared behind Laura in the hallway.

Her tear-streaked face looked impossibly small.

“Mommy?”

I wanted her nowhere near this.

Then she said something that stopped me.

“Grandma told Daddy you had to get mad first.”

Nobody breathed.

I slowly turned toward Margaret.

Rose continued because children sometimes tell the truth before adults can decide which truth is dangerous.

“She said if you got mad in front of everybody, Daddy could keep me.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

Beth looked at David.

David looked at the floor.

The slap had not been random.

Neither had Beth spitting on me.

They had wanted me angry.

They had wanted witnesses.

And I had given them exactly what they needed when I struck Margaret.
