Chapter 4 - KANDAHAR

Hayes didn’t hide it.

“Kandahar?”

He frowned.

Then remembered.

Not Ethan.

Ethan’s father.

Colonel James Walker.

Patricia’s late husband.

James and Hayes served together years earlier.

That was the connection.

Ethan had grown up believing Hayes owed Walker family.

Why?

James Walker saved Hayes during an attack.

Real courage.

Real debt of gratitude.

Hayes attended James’s funeral.

Helped Ethan secure mentorship opportunities.

But never promotions.

Those had to be earned.

Ethan apparently resented distinction.

Patricia resented it more.

“She believes I abandoned him,” Hayes said.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Then he showed me letters.

Ethan repeatedly asked Hayes for recommendations.

Hayes provided appropriate ones.

Then Ethan requested help getting selected for competitive post.

Hayes refused to interfere.

Ethan stopped contacting him.

Patricia transformed that into betrayal.

Then I understood banquet.

Ethan wanted Hayes impressed.

Patricia humiliated me because she believed my modest reputation made Ethan look weak.

They had built entire evening around status.

Then another letter surfaced.

From James Walker before his death.

To Ethan.

Son, never confuse my reputation with your own. You don’t inherit respect. You earn it.

I read it twice.

Patricia had kept copy.

Had Ethan seen it?

Yes.

Hayes personally gave original to him.

Then why behave opposite?

Because knowing lesson and living it are different.

Then investigation found Halcyon executive Mercer had promised Ethan introductions.

Not guaranteed promotion.

Just influence.

Ethan risked career for possibility of appearing important.

Then Vanessa called me.

Not about case.

“Grace, there’s something you should know about Patricia.”

“What?”

“She knew.”

My chest tightened.

“Knew what?”

“Not everything. But she knew Ethan was meeting Mercer.”

“How?”

“She arranged first dinner.”

There it was.

Patricia’s obsession with her son’s advancement wasn’t background noise.

She had helped open the door.
