I read it.
Every word.
Grace Walker cultivates senior officers for preferential treatment.
Hayes specifically mentioned.
She uses investigative access to build influence.
Projection.
Ethan accused me of what he was doing.
Then one sentence:
Her marriage gives her access to information beyond her assignment.
That almost made me laugh.
He had used our marriage to access mine.
The complaint failed because no evidence.
But it triggered review.
My work examined.
Emails.
Assignments.
Recommendations.
Nothing improper found.
I should have felt vindicated.
Instead I felt violated.
He had tried to make institution distrust me.
Then came worse.
The complaint included private marital details.
Arguments.
My work hours.
My medication for migraines.

His face collapsed.
No shouting.
No dramatic slap.

“I can’t be married to someone who needs me smaller to feel whole.”
He whispered:
“I can change.”
“I hope you do.”
“For us?”
“No.”
That was hardest sentence.
“For yourself.”
Then I removed wedding ring.
Placed it on table.
He stared at it.
I left.
Outside, Vanessa was waiting for her own interview.
She saw my bare hand.
Said nothing.
Then removed her gold snake bracelet.
“I hate this thing now.”
I looked at it.
“It wasn’t the bracelet.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Objects become symbols because people give them meaning.
Wine.
Bracelet.
Ring.
Uniform.
None caused anything.
People did.
Then Vanessa told me one final secret.
Patricia had paid for bracelet.
Not Ethan.
Ethan chose it.
Patricia reimbursed him because she considered Vanessa “useful.”
