Chapter 7 - THE NAME ETHAN WOULDN’T SAY

Ethan initially refused name.

Counsel negotiations followed.

Then he cooperated.

Colonel Marcus Bell.

Senior acquisition officer.

Bell allegedly provided nonpublic guidance to favored contractors.

Ethan served as intermediary.

Not mastermind.

Still participant.

Evidence required verification.

Investigators found communications.

Meetings.

Calendars.

Expense anomalies.

Enough to expand review.

I stayed out.

My conflict remained.

Then Bell denied everything.

Called Ethan disgruntled.

Possible.

So investigators tested.

Vanessa’s messages supported Ethan.

Mercer’s calendar supported meetings.

Patricia’s dinner records supported introductions.

Then one communication:

Bell:

Walker needs to keep his wife away from this.

Mercer:

He says she suspects nothing.

My stomach tightened.

Ethan had discussed me.

Not as wife.

Risk.

Then:

Bell:

Hayes trusts her. That makes her dangerous.

That explained General Hayes’s salute differently.

Not secret rank.

Trust.

Professional respect.

Something Ethan desperately wanted.

Something he couldn’t manipulate.

Then Bell’s attorney attacked me.

Claimed I targeted husband due marital dispute.

Problem:

Initial irregularities predated banquet.

Documented.

My recognition of Vanessa came afterward.

Timeline protected integrity.

Then investigators found Ethan had actually withheld one request from Bell.

Bell wanted source identity.

Ethan refused.

Good.

Again, not total villain.

He crossed lines.

But one line he didn’t cross.

Why?

Ethan said:

“Because that could get someone hurt.”

I wanted to scream.

“You understood harm there?”

He looked destroyed.

“Yes.”

“Just not when it was me.”

He had no answer.

Then Bell investigation produced evidence beyond Ethan.

Others involved.

Some cleared.

Some disciplined.

Some cases referred.

Complex.

No grand conspiracy where everyone was corrupt.

Systems worked because enough people weren’t.

Then Hayes told me:

“Your husband may cooperate.”

“I know.”

“That matters.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t obligate you personally.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Grace, there’s another matter.”

“What?”

“Your husband filed a complaint against you six months ago.”

I froze.

“What complaint?”

Anonymous allegation.

That I abused investigative authority for personal advancement.

Unsubstantiated.

Closed.

I never knew.

The source had now been traced through metadata.

Ethan.

Before the banquet.

Before I recognized Vanessa.

May you like

Before everything collapsed.

My husband had been quietly trying to damage my career while sleeping beside me.
