Chapter 14 - Everyone Went to the Lake House

Thomas was gone.
The moment Evelyn heard Jonathan was driving toward Mercer’s lake property, she asked where her husband was.
Sarah checked.
Thomas had left his hotel thirty minutes earlier.
His phone was off.
Evelyn stood so quickly her chair struck the wall.
“You have to stop him.”
“Why?”
“He knows where Charles keeps the original trust ledger.”
“How?”
“Because Thomas helped create it.”
I stared at her.
“You said Thomas didn’t know.”
“He didn’t know what Charles later did with the accounts.”
“But he helped build the structure.”
“Yes.”
Every answer produced another lie underneath it.
Sarah dispatched officers toward the lake property.
I was told to stay away.
For once, I listened.
Lily was still recovering.
Whatever waited at that lake house mattered less than being with her.
Then my phone rang.
Thomas.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Daniel, I need you to listen.”
“You’re going to Mercer’s house.”
“Yes.”
“Turn around.”
“I can’t.”
“Police are on the way.”
“Good.”
“What are you doing?”
“Getting the original ledger.”
“Let Sarah handle it.”
“If Jonathan reaches it first, he’ll destroy it.”
“Then wait for police.”
Thomas breathed heavily.
“Rachel asked me to protect that ledger.”
“When?”
“The night before she died.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You spoke to her?”
“Yes.”
“You never told me.”
“I was ashamed.”
“Of what?”
“I told her to stop investigating.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew what she would discover about me.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did you do?”
“I signed the first Mercer-Hart transfer.”
The confession landed softly.
Almost gently.
“That transfer started all of this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought I was consolidating Robert Mercer’s property into a legitimate trust for Rachel.”
“But Charles used it.”
“Yes.”
“Evelyn knew?”
“Not then.”
“Jonathan?”
“He was a junior administrator.”
“So Jonathan learned the system from you.”
“Yes.”
Thomas sounded close to tears.
“I built the door. Jonathan figured out how to walk through it.”
A car door closed on his end.
“Thomas?”
“I’m here.”
“Where?”
“At the lake.”
“Do not go inside.”
“I see Charles.”
“Wait for police.”
“Jonathan’s car is here too.”
Then another sound.
A door opening.
Thomas whispered, “Someone else is here.”
“Who?”
Silence.
“Thomas?”
His breathing changed.
“No.”
“What?”
“This can’t be right.”
“Who do you see?”
The call disconnected.
I immediately called Sarah.
She was already receiving updates.
Officers were approaching.
Then the lake-house alarm triggered.
For seventeen minutes, I knew nothing.
I sat beside Lily and stared at the wall.
Finally Sarah called.
“Thomas is alive.”
I nearly collapsed.
“What happened?”
“He was found outside the house.”
“Charles?”
“Inside.”
“Jonathan?”
“Gone.”
“What about the documents?”
“We recovered several boxes.”
“Was anyone else there?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Martin Vale.”
The notary.
Again.
“Thomas saw him?”
“Yes.”
“Why was he shocked?”
“Because Martin has something Thomas believed was destroyed.”
“What?”
“A video.”
My stomach tightened.
“Of Rachel?”
“Yes.”
“From when?”
“The night before she died.”
I stood.
“What does it show?”
“We haven’t reviewed it yet.”
“Why not?”
“It is sealed inside an evidence container with the original Mercer-Hart ledger.”
“Then review it.”
“We will.”
“When?”
“Daniel—”
“My wife died eighteen months ago. My daughter nearly died yesterday. Stop protecting me from the next five minutes.”
Sarah went quiet.
Then she said, “Come to the station after Lily is discharged.”
Lily’s doctor cleared her that evening.
She stayed with Claire Jensen under police-arranged protection while I went to meet Sarah.
The recovered evidence filled half a conference table.
Original ledgers.
Insurance agreements.
Medical authorizations.
Trust amendments.
And a small digital camera card in an evidence sleeve.
Martin Vale claimed Rachel had given it to him for safekeeping.
Nobody believed him.
But the metadata appeared authentic.
Sarah inserted a forensic copy.
The video began.
Rachel appeared inside the Hart Foundation archive room.
She was alive.
Frightened.
Holding a folder.
Then another person entered the frame.
Rachel looked directly at them and said:
“You changed Daniel’s medical record.”
A male voice answered from outside the camera angle.
“I corrected a vulnerability.”
I recognized the voice.
Not Jonathan Morgan.
Not Charles Mercer.
Not Andrew Vale.
It was the same voice that had been calling me anonymously.
