Chapter 2 - My Dead Wife Signed Six Months Late

Sarah took my phone immediately.
“Don’t disconnect.”
The caller had already done it for us.
She checked the screen.
Unknown number.
No caller ID.
No obvious trace information.
“Did you recognize the voice?” she asked.
“I know I’ve heard him before.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Evelyn gave a brittle laugh.
“This is absurd.”
Sarah turned toward her.
“What is?”
“All of it. An injector mysteriously under my seat, some strange caller, Daniel becoming hysterical.”
I looked at Lily.
“Hysterical?”
Evelyn followed my eyes and changed direction.
“Lily had a frightening medical event. We’re all emotional.”
“You were telling her to blame me.”
“I was asking her to tell the truth.”
“You told her I forgot the injector.”
“You did.”
Sarah lifted the evidence bag.
“No, he didn’t.”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
Sarah continued.
“Mr. Hart told the responding paramedic the injector was missing from Lily’s backpack. We obtained hotel security footage showing him placing something into that side pocket when they arrived.”
I stared at Sarah.
“You have footage?”
“From the entrance.”
Evelyn said nothing.
I looked back at the document.
Rachel’s signature sat beneath an authorization allowing changes to something called the Hart Family Supplemental Benefit Policy.
“What is this?”
Sarah answered carefully.
“We don’t know yet.”
“You found it in Evelyn’s car.”
“In a locked document case.”
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“It’s family paperwork.”
“Signed by a dead woman?”
“Rachel signed many things before she died.”
“The date says six months later.”
“A clerical error.”
I looked at the notary section.
It had been notarized.
By someone named Martin Vale.
I had heard the name.
I just couldn’t place it.
“What does this policy cover?”
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward Lily.
That was enough to make me keep reading.
The beneficiary section had been amended.
The original beneficiary information wasn’t included, but the new section named:
EVELYN HART — CONTINGENT ADMINISTRATOR.
I turned another page.
There were references to medical incapacity.
Dependent care.
Minor guardianship expenses.
And a payout limit of three million dollars.
My hands went cold.
“Three million?”
Evelyn snapped, “It is not life insurance.”
“I didn’t say it was.”
Sarah held out her hand.
“Daniel, let me preserve the document.”
I hesitated.
Then gave it to her.
“What exactly happens under that policy if Lily becomes incapacitated?”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Don’t be disgusting.”
“You were hiding her injector in your car.”
“I did not put it there.”
“And you had paperwork signed with Rachel’s name after she died.”
“I told you, it’s a date error.”
Lily whispered from the bed.
“Dad?”
I turned immediately.
She looked exhausted.
“What is it?”
“Grandma had another pen.”
Evelyn’s head jerked toward her.
Sarah stepped between them.
“Lily, what kind of pen?”
“One like mine.”
“When?”
“At lunch.”
I sat beside the bed.
“Where did you see it?”
“In her purse.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“She is medicated.”
Sarah didn’t even look at her.
“What happened to the pen, Lily?”
“She gave it to a man.”
Every hair on my arms rose.
“What man?”
Lily squeezed her stuffed hospital blanket.
“The man Grandma told me was Mommy’s friend.”
I stared at Evelyn.
Rachel had been dead for eighteen months.
“What was his name?”
Lily frowned.
“I don’t remember.”
“What did he look like?”
“Gray hair.”
Evelyn gave a frustrated sigh.
“There were hundreds of gray-haired men at the luncheon.”
Lily shook her head.
“He had the ring.”
“What ring?”
“The red one.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Again.
Small.
But Sarah saw it this time.
“Do you know who she means?” Sarah asked.
“No.”
Lily whispered, “Yes, you do.”
Evelyn stared at her granddaughter.
Lily pulled the blanket toward her chin.
“He told Grandma, ‘Rachel should’ve stayed quiet.’”
My pulse slammed against my throat.
Sarah took one step toward Evelyn.
“Who said that?”
Evelyn said nothing.
My phone buzzed in Sarah’s hand.
A text had arrived from the unknown caller.
