Chapter 8 - Dr. Vale Came to Finish Something

Hospital security locked the floor down.
Sarah called for additional officers.
I stayed beside Lily.
Whatever answers Andrew Vale carried could wait if the alternative was leaving my daughter alone.
Evelyn stood under supervision near the window.
Thomas was in the consultation room.
Neither was allowed to leave.
Ten minutes passed.
Then fifteen.
No Andrew.
Sarah returned.
“He entered the garage but never came through the main lobby.”
“Service elevators?”
“Being checked.”
Evelyn looked frightened.
“He knows the building.”
“How?”
“The foundation funded this wing.”
I stared at her.
“Of course it did.”
“He served on the original advisory committee.”
Sarah asked, “Are there staff-only entrances from the garage?”
“Yes.”
That information produced immediate movement.
Security teams went toward the lower service corridor.
I sat beside Lily.
Her eyes fluttered open.
“Dad?”
“I’m here.”
“Is Grandma still mad?”
My chest tightened.
“No one is going to bother you.”
“Did I do something bad?”
“No.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
She reached for my hand.
I held it carefully around the IV tubing.
Then she whispered, “The doctor man was in Mommy’s picture.”
“What doctor man?”
“The one with Grandpa.”
I looked toward Thomas.
“Andrew Vale?”
Lily nodded.
“You’ve seen him before today?”
“At Grandma’s house.”
Evelyn turned sharply.
“When?”
Lily recoiled.
I stood between them.
“Don’t question her.”
Evelyn whispered, “I didn’t know.”
“Lily, when did you see him?”
“At Christmas.”
Four months earlier.
“Where?”
“In Grandma’s office.”
“What were they doing?”
“He was putting papers in the fireplace.”
Sarah had heard enough.
She stepped closer.
“What papers?”
Lily shrugged.
“One had Mommy’s picture.”
Evelyn covered her face.
“Andrew told me he destroyed everything.”
I stared at her.
“You let him burn documents related to Rachel?”
“I wasn’t in the room.”
“Lily was.”
“I didn’t know she had seen him.”
The pattern returned.
Adults assuming a child did not notice.
A child noticing everything.
Sarah’s radio crackled.
Security had found a maintenance door propped open on the second-floor service corridor.
A camera showed a man matching Andrew Vale entering the stairwell.
No footage showed him leaving.
He was still somewhere in the building.
Sarah ordered us moved.
Two officers escorted Lily’s bed toward a secure pediatric unit.
As we crossed the hallway, an alarm sounded near the service stairwell.
A man emerged.
Gray jacket.
Medical mask.
Silver hair.
Andrew Vale.
He saw Sarah and ran.
Everything happened quickly.
Sarah pursued.
Hospital security converged from the opposite corridor.
Andrew reached inside his coat.
I instinctively moved between him and Lily’s bed.
“Hands!”
Sarah’s voice cut through the hallway.
Andrew froze.
For one terrible second, his hand remained inside the coat.
Then he slowly pulled it free.
Empty.
Security restrained him against the wall.
A small insulated medical pouch fell from beneath his coat.
Sarah immediately stopped anyone from touching it.
Andrew looked at me.
He was in his late fifties, calm even while two officers held his arms.
“Daniel Hart.”
“You know me.”
“I know your file.”
My stomach turned.
Sarah said, “Don’t speak.”
Andrew ignored her.
“You should ask Evelyn why Rachel was tested.”
“For what?”
Evelyn made a sound behind me.
“Andrew, shut up.”
He smiled faintly.
“Still protecting Thomas?”
Thomas stepped forward.
“What does that mean?”
Andrew looked almost amused.
“You never told him?”
Evelyn rushed toward him.
An officer blocked her.
“Don’t.”
Andrew turned back to me.
“The second injector wasn’t meant to kill you.”
“What was it meant to do?”
“Make you unconscious long enough to get a clean sample.”
“Sample of what?”
He looked toward Lily.
“Blood.”
My entire body went cold.
“Why?”
Sarah stepped between us.
“That’s enough.”
Andrew smiled.
“You already know the answer, Detective.”
“No, I don’t.”
He nodded toward the insulated pouch.
“You will.”
The pouch was secured.
Hours later, Sarah returned with preliminary inventory information.
Inside were sterile tubes.
Syringes.
A sedative ampule.
And two DNA collection kits.
One labeled DANIEL HART.
The other labeled LILY HART.
But the most disturbing item was a third sealed tube.
It was already filled with dried blood.
The label carried Rachel’s name.
