Chapter 10 - THE SECRET MY MOTHER HAD BEEN HIDING FROM US

I thought Chapter Ten of our disaster would be about Vanessa.

It wasn't.

It was about Mom.

Dana asked Laura Bennett to meet us.

Laura arrived carrying Dad's estate file.

She looked at Mom.

“You need to tell them.”

Mom's hands tightened.

“Tell us what?”

Laura sat.

“Margaret didn't voluntarily lend Brandon $780,000.”

I turned toward Mom.

“What?”

Mom began crying.

Not loudly.

She simply folded inward.

Laura continued.

“Brandon initially asked for $250,000.”

That sounded different.

Mom could afford that.

Barely.

“She agreed?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to make it $780,000?”

Laura looked at Brandon.

He had joined us that morning.

His face went blank.

“I don't know.”

Mom finally spoke.

“Vanessa came to me.”

“When?”

“Three days after I agreed to the $250,000.”

“What did she say?”

Mom wiped her face.

“She said Brandon had used company money improperly.”

Brandon stood.

“What?”

“She said there was an audit.”

“There wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

Mom continued.

Vanessa told her Brandon could face criminal charges if BC Logistics failed.

She showed Mom spreadsheets.

Bank transfers.

Documents suggesting Brandon had diverted customer payments.

“Were they real?” I asked.

“Some.”

Brandon sat again.

He looked sick.

He had moved company funds between accounts improperly to cover payroll.

Not theft.

But ugly enough to frighten a grieving widow.

Vanessa told Mom that $780,000 would stabilize everything and keep Brandon from “going to jail.”

“Why didn't you call me?”

Mom looked at me.

“You had just made partner.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“You were finally happy.”

The old parental lie.

I didn't want to burden you.

So I let the burden become catastrophic.

Laura had advised Mom not to lend the money.

Mom did it anyway.

But she insisted on collateral.

That was why the original lien existed.

And Laura created the written instruction forbidding further transfers without direct confirmation.

Vanessa knew.

Then bypassed it.

The ultimate twist was painful because it changed Brandon too.

He had believed Mom gave him $780,000 because she trusted his business.

She hadn't.

She gave it because Vanessa convinced her he was facing prison.

Brandon looked at his mother.

“You thought I stole money?”

“I thought you were desperate.”

“Why didn't you ask me?”

“Vanessa said you'd deny it.”

He stood and walked to the window.

His shoulders shook once.

For months, I had thought Brandon and Vanessa conspired to exploit Mom.

The truth was uglier and more human.

Vanessa manipulated both of them separately.

She told Brandon Mom believed in him.

She told Mom Brandon was in danger.

Then she used the money to keep a failing company alive while building her competing business.

But Laura had one more thing.

“Margaret contacted me four months ago.”

I looked at Mom.

“Why?”

“She had started suspecting something.”

“What?”

Mom whispered:

“I found a bank statement in Vanessa's trash.”

Crown Freight.

Mom had seen it.

She realized Vanessa had another company.

She confronted her privately.

“What did Vanessa say?”

Mom's face tightened.

“She told me if I caused trouble, Brandon would lose everything and blame me.”

That explained the silence.

The cleaning.

The submission.

The way Mom had learned to shrink inside that enormous house.

But then Laura said:

“Margaret did something Vanessa doesn't know about.”

Mom looked at me.

May you like

For the first time, there was steel in her expression.

“I started recording her.”
