Chapter 5 - THE FIRST PERSON VANESSA TRIED TO SACRIFICE

Richard Holloway stopped protecting his daughter.

Not because he suddenly became brave.

Because Vanessa had put his law license at risk.

The $143,000 transfer into an old trust subaccount created an accounting nightmare.

Richard immediately notified his firm's ethics counsel and bank.

The money was frozen before it moved again.

Vanessa claimed Brandon initiated the transfer.

Bank authentication records contradicted her.

Her device.

Her login.

Her two-factor code.

For the first time, Brandon saw evidence he couldn't explain away.

He sat across from Mom in Dana's office.

“I didn't know.”

Mom looked at him.

“You didn't want to know.”

He lowered his head.

That was worse.

The money trail continued.

Vanessa's consulting payments had funded designer furniture, club dues, vacations, and approximately $62,000 in credit-card payments.

But not all of it.

$75,000 had gone somewhere else.

A company called Northstar Residential Partners.

Dana searched property records.

Northstar owned a two-bedroom condo in Charlotte's Fourth Ward.

Purchased eight months earlier.

Cash contribution:

$75,000.

I stared at Brandon.

“Did you know about the condo?”

“No.”

Mom asked quietly, “Who lives there?”

Nobody knew.

Until Richard recognized the LLC organizer.

His younger son.

Vanessa's brother, Tyler Holloway.

Tyler was twenty-nine.

A residential broker.

He came to Dana's office voluntarily.

“The condo is Vanessa's.”

Brandon's face tightened.

“Why does my wife own a condo?”

“She said it was an investment.”

“Why hide it?”

Tyler looked uncomfortable.

“She said you were separating.”

“We weren't.”

“She said you were.”

“When?”

“Last summer.”

Brandon sat back.

Last summer was when Mom gave him the $780,000.

The timing changed everything.

Vanessa had been preparing a separate asset while encouraging Brandon to pour family money into the house and company.

But Tyler gave us something else.

Vanessa had asked him to draft a listing package for the Weddington villa.

Three months earlier.

“She wanted to sell the house?”

Brandon asked.

“She said after the party.”

“What party?”

Tyler looked at him.

“Your anniversary party.”

The party that had just happened.

The humiliation of Mom cleaning the courtyard hadn't been random cruelty on a normal afternoon.

Vanessa had been preparing the property for photographs and potential buyers.

She wanted everything spotless.

Brandon looked physically ill.

Then Tyler opened his phone.

“I thought you knew this too.”

He showed Brandon an email Vanessa had sent him.

Subject:

POST-CLOSING PLAN.

One sentence:

Once Weddington sells, Brandon can deal with his mother's loan himself. I'll already be out.

Brandon stared at it.

His wife had not merely been cruel to our mother.

She had been preparing to leave him with the debt.
