Chapter 14 - HERITAGE

HERITAGE controlled trust documents, security systems, synthetic media, and training facilities.

Its goal was not profit alone.

It predicted which family member would choose status, fear, love, or obedience under pressure.

The Carter family had trained it through generations.

The system offered me control.

As highest-ranking verified Carter descendant, I could shut down every facility.

The price was ownership.

Accepting would make me director of the same architecture.

I refused.

Independent agencies disconnected facilities one at a time.

Courts froze trusts.

Employees severed company networks.

Slower than a master command.

Safer than concentrating power.

HERITAGE released one final video.

Liam sat in the ballroom at age fifteen.

Madison stood before him.

I stood behind her.

The future scene showed my son striking her.

A prediction designed to make us fear healing would fail.

Liam watched it once.

Then said, “That isn’t me.”

We deleted nothing.

We preserved it as evidence, not prophecy.

Years passed.

Liam recovered.

Noah, Sophie, and Caleb built separate lives with independent support.

Some chose contact.

Some did not.

Madison served her sentence and sent letters only when invited.

I remained in the Army, later accepting a command focused on ethics and family protection.

The old ballroom became a public training site.

The broken glass from the gala remained in an evidence case.

Then, on the tenth anniversary, a sealed military envelope arrived at my office.

No sender.

Inside was one invitation.

DEFENSE GALA — HERITAGE RESTORATION.

Guest of honor:

GENERAL LIAM CARTER.

My son was fifteen.

Not a general.

May you like

Not even old enough to serve.

The event was scheduled tomorrow.
