Chapter 2 - THE SECOND LIAM

I did not set down the child in my arms.

Whatever the man on the screen claimed, this boy was frightened, injured, and clinging to me.

I asked him quietly, “What is your name?”

“Liam.”

“What did we eat for breakfast?”

“Blueberry pancakes.”

Correct.

“What song do you ask me to sing when you’re scared?”

His eyes filled.

“The train song.”

Correct again.

The boy on the video might be a trained double, a relative, or a manipulated recording.

General Brooks ordered communications sealed and exits controlled.

Victor Shaw tried to reach the service door.

Military police stopped him.

Madison insisted the locked ballroom was part of a terrorist attack.

I watched her hands.

They were steady.

She knew more.

The phone inside the envelope continued streaming.

The man wearing my father’s face demanded the acquisition folder.

General Brooks asked for proof the second child was alive.

The camera moved closer.

The boy raised his left hand.

A small crescent scar crossed his palm.

My Liam had received that scar at age three after falling near the garden fountain.

I looked at the hand of the child in my arms.

The same scar.

Impossible.

Advanced cloning was fantasy.

Identical twins could share appearance, not identical acquired scars.

Someone had copied the wound deliberately.

Then the ballroom technician found the video source.

Not a distant military vehicle.

A room beneath the hotel.

The second child was inside the building.

A rescue team moved through the service tunnels.

Madison shouted that they would trigger a bomb.

No one had mentioned a bomb.

General Brooks looked at her.

“How do you know?”

Her face froze.

The gala recording captured the moment.

Then Liam whispered into my ear:

“Aunt Madison told me to spill the water.”

My blood turned cold.

“She said if I didn’t, the other boy would get hurt.”

The slap was the signal.

The fall positioned him on the floor beneath a camera.

The public assault created chaos while someone switched data inside the ballroom security network.

The child in my arms was my son.

The second boy had been trained to resemble him for another purpose.

The rescue team found the basement room.

Empty.

Only a chair, a live camera, and a navy suit remained.

The video had been prerecorded hours earlier and digitally altered in real time.

My father was not holding a gun.

His face had been synthesized.

But the second child was real.

Hotel footage showed Madison entering with him through a loading dock before the gala.

She had brought a replacement boy into the building.

Then the acquisition folder emitted a faint electronic pulse.

General Brooks placed it inside a signal-blocking case.

The folder itself had been targeted.

Someone wanted its tracking code.

Victor’s office.

Madison’s family trust.

Or both.

Then a military officer approached me with a sealed witness statement.

The second boy’s name was Noah Carter.

He was listed as Madison’s son.

My sister had never publicly given birth.
