Chapter 4 - THE MILITARY FOLDER

The acquisition folder contained evidence of defective body armor sold to the Army.

I had discovered the failures after three soldiers under my command were wounded.

Victor approved substituted materials.

Madison signed quality certifications.

My father, Robert Carter, chaired the board and authorized settlement payments to silence inspectors.

My mother controlled the family trust that hid the profits.

The entire family knew pieces.

No one knew I led the review.

General Brooks had come to announce that the Department of Defense was suspending Carter Defense contracts and placing the company under federal oversight.

The sealed envelope contained my new assignment.

Temporary military liaison to the receivership.

I would help protect employees and preserve legitimate manufacturing while investigators removed the family.

Madison believed the folder transferred the company to me.

Jealousy had sharpened her panic.

Then my father stood at the head table.

“I did what I had to do to save the company.”

“Defective armor killed soldiers.”

“No one died.”

“Three may never walk normally again.”

He looked away.

The ballroom cameras recorded everything.

My mother begged me to stop discussing classified issues.

She knew enough to be afraid.

Then police found Noah’s transport van abandoned near the lake.

Inside were his shoes, medication, and a drawing.

Two boys stood beneath a chandelier.

One labeled LIAM.

One labeled NOAH.

Between them, Madison held a green dress stained with water.

Behind her, a man with four stars held a sealed envelope.

Noah had drawn the gala before it happened.

The children had rehearsed the scene.

Then a line appeared at the bottom:
