Chapter 11 - Michael Had Been in the House

Michael admitted it after I confronted him with travel records he voluntarily agreed to clarify once the family financial review reached him.
He'd gone to Mom's house that evening.
Rachel was already there.
They argued.
Rachel told him she knew about the debts.
Michael begged her not to expose him.
Then Victoria joined them.
According to Michael, Rachel refused to back down.
He left through the front door around ten.
“Was Rachel alive?”
“Yes.”
“Was she hurt?”
“No.”
“Did you see Sophia?”
He looked away.
“She was at the top of the stairs.”
My chest tightened.
Sophia had been awake before the fall.
“What happened after you left?”
“I don't know.”
“Why lie about being in Memphis?”
“Because Mom called after Rachel fell and told me if anyone knew I'd been there, they'd think the fight was about me.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I let her convince me silence was protection.”
That phrase again.
Protection.
My father protected Michael.
My mother protected Michael.
Margaret protected Victoria.
I protected myself from difficult questions.
And Sophia had been the only person in the family nobody bothered to protect from the consequences.
Michael agreed to cooperate fully with the financial review.
That cost him his marriage once his wife learned the truth.
But his account gave us something essential.
Rachel was alive after Michael left.

The final confrontation had been between Rachel and Victoria.
Exactly as Sophia remembered.
