Chapter 12 - “I Didn't Mean for Her to Fall”

My mother finally agreed to speak with me privately in the presence of counsel.
I brought no accusations.
I brought Rachel's timeline.
The financial records.
Michael's account.
Sophia's professionally documented recollections.
And one question.
“What happened after Michael left?”
Victoria stared at the table.
“Rachel said she was done protecting this family.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her she didn't understand what exposure would do to Michael.”
“She understood perfectly.”
Victoria's mouth tightened.
“She walked toward the stairs.”
Then came the pause I'd been waiting eleven months for.
“I grabbed her.”
“Where?”
“Her wrist.”
“Why?”
“She had the folder.”
Rachel tried to pull away.
Victoria grabbed again.
A wineglass was knocked from the console table.
Wine spilled across the hardwood near the stairs.
Rachel stepped backward.
Victoria reached for the folder.
Rachel lost her footing.
“She fell,” Mom whispered.
I couldn't speak.
“Did you push her?”
“No.”
“Did you grab her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you cause her to lose her balance?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“I don't know.”
That answer hurt more than a denial.
“What did you do next?”
“I went down to her.”
“Then?”
Her breathing changed.
“I saw Sophia.”
There it was.
Sophia had been standing upstairs holding Rachel's bracelet.
“What did you tell her?”
“That Mommy had fallen.”
“And then you cleaned the wine.”
Victoria nodded.
“Before calling for help?”
Another nod.
“Why?”
“Because I knew what it would look like.”
I stared at my mother.
“You delayed helping my wife so you could change what the scene looked like.”
“I didn't mean for Rachel to fall.”
Maybe that was true.
May you like
But Rachel's death was no longer an accident untouched by human choices.
And my mother's worst decision had happened after the fall.
