Chapter 8 - I Chose My Daughter Over the Carter Name

The Carter Foundation board included people I'd known since childhood.
Exposing financial irregularities would damage more than Victoria.
My father's reputation would be questioned.
Donors would demand answers.
Scholarship recipients might wonder whether their funding was secure.
My mother knew exactly which pressure point to use.
She called me.
“Think before you destroy your father's legacy.”
I almost admired the audacity.
“Sophia was eating garbage.”
“I was trying to teach her consequences.”
“For remembering her mother?”
Silence.
“Is that why you punished her?”
“She wouldn't stop repeating things she didn't understand.”
There it was.
Not about manners.
Not about discipline.
About silence.
I told the foundation's independent leadership what Rachel had discovered and provided the records I possessed.
Once I did that, there was no easy way back.
The financial review began.
Victoria was removed from day-to-day control pending review.
Then she made her first serious mistake.
She didn't call me.
She called Margaret.
“Daniel has Rachel's computer,” she said.
Margaret asked why that mattered.
Victoria answered:
“Because Rachel wrote things down before she understood them.”
Margaret recorded nothing.
She didn't need to.
What mattered was Victoria's urgency.
She wasn't asking about Sophia.
She wasn't asking about her foundation position.

She wanted Rachel's laptop.
And that told me there was probably something on it I hadn't found yet.
