Chapter 13 - SERENA’S LETTER

Serena wrote after completing part of her sentence and treatment.

Through attorneys first.

Then, once legally permissible, one letter addressed to me.

I read it.

She wrote:

I believed becoming your wife meant securing a place nobody could take away. Ethan’s attachment to Lily made me feel replaceable.

Then:

I treated his fear as something I could use to make myself necessary.

No excuse.

Finally.

She apologized for assaulting Lily.

For harming Ethan.

For manipulating the estate-planning process toward her own security.

She also wrote:

Grant told me repeatedly that independent review was required. I kept trying to make that feel like an insult instead of a safeguard.

That mattered.

Not everyone around Serena failed.

Grant had done his job.

Rachel had done hers.

Lily had tried.

The system had contained several safeguards.

I had nearly overridden them because I wanted emotional simplicity.

I did not respond.

Forgiveness did not require correspondence.
