The pediatrician reviewed Ethan’s recent visits.
Two unexplained bruises.
One on his upper arm.
One near his thigh.
Both had previously been considered ordinary toddler injuries.
Toddlers fall.
Constantly.
Retrospective interpretation is dangerous.
We did not rewrite every bruise into abuse.
Instead, dates were compared with Serena’s access.
One bruise occurred after a day Serena spent alone with Ethan for forty minutes while Lily attended a dentist appointment.
No camera.
No witness.
Could not be attributed definitively.
Another came after Ethan fell against a coffee table.
That incident was witnessed by two people.
Accidental.
Precision prevented the case from becoming fantasy.
The strongest provable conduct remained on video.
Rough handling.
The foyer assault on Lily.
Dragging Ethan.
Threatening statements.
The broader question was whether Serena posed continuing danger.
Child protective authorities treated that seriously.
She was barred from unsupervised access to Ethan while investigation proceeded.
Since she was not a parent, there was no custody battle.
I ended the engagement.
That part required no court.
She moved out.
Through counsel.
Her belongings were collected under supervision.
I changed locks.
Not because I believed she would break in.
