Chapter 11 - THE SEALED ENVELOPE

My father’s envelope contained three pages.
The first began with my name.
Daniel,
If Samuel gives you this, then something has happened that prevented me from speaking to you myself.
I stopped reading.
Rachel waited.
Samuel sat across the room, looking like a man at his own sentencing.
I continued.
Dad wrote that he had discovered discrepancies in Vanessa’s past while reviewing insurance documents connected to the Carter Foundation.
He named Aaron Vale.
He named the dismissed divorce case.
Then came something I hadn’t expected.
I knew Vanessa before you met her.
My hands tightened around the paper.
Dad described Vanessa as a twenty-two-year-old volunteer at the foundation.
She had accused a supervisor of misappropriating charitable funds.
Dad investigated.
The accusation proved partly true.
The supervisor was fired.
Vanessa was praised for speaking up.
That was how Dad remembered her.
Years later, when I introduced Vanessa as the woman I planned to marry, Dad recognized her.
But she claimed she barely remembered him.
Dad accepted that explanation.
For a while.
The second page changed tone.
He wrote that shortly before my wedding, someone anonymously warned him Vanessa was married.
He confronted her.
She denied it.
He believed her because he wanted to believe me.
That sentence hurt.
Then, two years before his death, the anonymous messages began again.
This time they included financial demands.
Aaron.
Dad tracked him down.
But Aaron wasn’t simply blackmailing Vanessa.
He was blackmailing both of them.
The final lines were worse.
Vanessa has convinced you that I distrust her because I cannot let go of control. That is partly my fault. I have controlled too much in your life. But this is different.
If I am wrong, I will apologize to her.
If I am right, you must ask why she needed me to believe Aaron was dangerous.
I turned to Samuel.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“You had this for two years.”
“I had instructions to give it to you only if certain conditions occurred.”
“What conditions?”
“An arrest in connection with Edward’s death. A formal challenge to the trust. Or evidence Vanessa had harmed another member of the family.”
My voice went quiet.
“My mother being pushed down the stairs finally qualified?”
Samuel looked sick.
“Yes.”
Rage rose in me.
But underneath it was something else.
Understanding.
Dad had tried to protect me with conditions and sealed envelopes.
Mom had tried to protect me with verification and silence.
Samuel had tried to protect me by following instructions.
Every one of them had treated me like someone who couldn’t survive the truth.
And every delay had given Vanessa more room.
The third page contained only one handwritten line.
Ask Aaron what happened at the Lake Briar house.
I had never heard of Lake Briar.
Rachel immediately searched the name.
A property record appeared.
A small lakeside rental in western Pennsylvania.
Owner at the time: Morrow Consulting.
Aaron’s shell company.
Occupancy records showed one unusual reservation.
Vanessa Hale.
Edward Carter.
Same weekend.
