Chapter 23 - THE LAST NINE SECONDS

Voice analysis alone could not convict anyone.

Brooks made that clear.

So investigators rebuilt the nine seconds around physical evidence.

Dad said, “Put that down.”

What was “that”?

The original scene photographs showed a broken crystal tumbler near the upper landing.

At the time, police assumed Dad dropped it during his collapse.

Archived purchase records showed Dad used identical glasses for bourbon.

Toxicology found crushed sedative consistent with ingestion through liquid.

A surviving carpet sample from the evidence locker contained residue from the same drug.

The glass had held the sedative.

Dad knew something was wrong.

Then he said, “I’m calling Daniel.”

The impact followed.

The old medical examiner reviewed the injuries again.

Dad had bruising on his upper arm and chest that had been attributed to striking the railing during the fall.

A biomechanics specialist said the pattern could also be consistent with force applied before the fall.

Could.

Not definitely.

Again, no miracle.

But then Owen’s lawyer approached prosecutors.

Owen wanted an agreement.

In exchange, he would testify truthfully.

He admitted Vanessa called him at 10:47 the night Dad died.

She asked him to activate maintenance mode remotely.

He refused.

At 11:30, she texted that she would do it herself.

He had deleted the message years ago.

His carrier backup retained metadata but not content.

Still, his testimony matched the system event.

Owen also admitted Vanessa called after Dad died and said, “It happened during the blind spot.”

Brooks asked what he thought she meant.

“At the time? I knew exactly what I was afraid she meant.”

He still helped erase the archive.

That was his crime.

His fear didn’t excuse it.

But his cooperation completed the chain.

By CH23, I finally knew almost all of what had happened.

Vanessa arrived before eleven fifteen.

She argued with Dad.

At some point he consumed a drink containing sedative.

Whether she prepared it remained for prosecutors to prove.

She activated the camera blind spot.

Dad confronted her near the study.

He said he would call me.

Seconds later, he fell.

Afterward, Vanessa lied about when she arrived and paid Owen to erase the footage.

The truth was no longer primarily a mystery.

The next question was consequence.

What would Vanessa do now that investigators could reconstruct the night?

I received the answer sooner than expected.

Rachel called.

“Vanessa just moved nearly four million dollars from a joint investment account.”

“Where?”

“Escrow controlled by her attorney.”

“Can she do that?”

“She can move funds she has legal access to. Whether she can keep them is another matter.”

Then Brooks called.

Vanessa had booked a private flight to the Cayman Islands for the following morning.

Not proof of guilt.

But prosecutors were no longer willing to wait.

They prepared applications for search warrants and travel restrictions.

Vanessa had spent years believing control meant staying one move ahead.

Now her instinct to run could become the decision that finally trapped her.

📖 With my father’s final minutes reconstructed, the mystery gave way to consequence as Vanessa began moving money and preparing to leave the country. 👇
