Chapter 14 - THE RECORDING FROM THE LAKE

Aaron lied about how much recording he had.

He admitted it when Brooks confronted him with the mailing label.

“Yes, I sent Margaret the photos.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa stopped paying.”

Brooks gave him a look of pure exhaustion.

“So this was leverage again.”

Aaron nodded.

“I wanted her scared.”

“You pushed an injured sixty-five-year-old woman into a confrontation with someone you considered dangerous.”

“I didn’t know Vanessa would hurt her.”

I wanted to hate him cleanly.

Instead, I saw another person who had turned truth into currency.

“Where’s the recording?”

Aaron hesitated.

Brooks said, “This is the moment where your next decision matters.”

He looked at me.

Then handed over a small flash drive.

The audio lasted twenty-eight minutes.

Most of it was ordinary enough to make the terrible parts worse.

Dad and Vanessa argued about the marriage record.

She accused him of interfering.

He accused her of lying.

Then Dad asked the question from his letter.

“Why Daniel?”

Vanessa answered after a long pause.

“Because he wanted someone who chose him.”

Dad said, “That isn’t an answer.”

“It is.”

“You built a life around my son because he was vulnerable.”

“I built a life he wanted.”

“On a lie.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, “You think truth automatically makes people happier?”

Dad responded, “No. I think it gives them the right to choose.”

I closed my eyes.

The conversation continued.

Dad mentioned the trust transfers.

Vanessa became angry.

She denied stealing.

That mattered.

“You think everything is about your money,” she said. “It isn’t.”

There it was.

The exact idea Mom had tried to tell me after the fall.

Dad asked where the funds went.

Vanessa said, “Keeping old mistakes buried costs money.”

Aaron shifted in his chair.

His blackmail.

But then Dad said something that changed the target of my attention.

“Aaron isn’t the only person you’re paying.”

Vanessa went silent.

Dad continued.

“What did you pay Owen Mercer for?”

My skin went cold.

The security technician.

Vanessa replied, “That has nothing to do with you.”

“It became my business when you accessed my home system.”

This conversation happened three months before Dad died.

Meaning Vanessa had already been dealing with Owen before the fatal fall.

Brooks stopped playback.

“That predates the invoice we found.”

Aaron said, “I told you it wasn’t just me.”

We continued.

Dad demanded Vanessa tell me everything.

She refused.

He said he would.

Then came the line Aaron had described.

“Then I’ll lose everything.”

Dad answered quietly.

“Maybe you should.”

The recording ended shortly after.

No confession to murder.

No threat.

But it proved Dad knew about security manipulation months before his death.

And Vanessa had been paying the technician before there was supposedly any reason to delete footage.

When Brooks asked Aaron whether he had copied the recording elsewhere, he said no.

For once, his answer sounded true.

That meant the flash drive in front of us was not magic evidence.

It was one more verified piece.

And it pointed toward a plan that began before Dad died.
