Chapter 8 - AARON VALE

Aaron Vale contacted me at 2:14 in the morning.
Not by text.
By voicemail.
“Stop digging unless you’re ready to lose what’s left of your family.”
I played it three times.
Rachel told me not to call him.
Detective Brooks told me the same thing.
Then Aaron called again while Brooks was sitting across from me.
She nodded once.
I answered on speaker.
“Aaron?”
Silence.
Then a tired male voice.
“You found the marriage record.”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa tell you I’m crazy yet?”
“She hasn’t told me anything.”
He laughed without humor.
“That sounds like her.”
Brooks silently wrote a note: KEEP HIM TALKING.
“Why did my father meet you?”
Aaron stopped laughing.
“He wanted proof.”
“Of what?”
“That she never divorced me.”
“Why?”
“Because he was trying to get her away from you.”
My jaw tightened.
“Why would he care about a marriage license enough to hire an investigator?”
Aaron breathed slowly.
“Because I told him the marriage license wasn’t the worst thing she lied about.”
“What was?”
“I’m not saying this on a phone.”
“Then meet me.”
“No.”
Brooks wrote: ASK ABOUT MONEY.
“My mother found six hundred forty thousand dollars missing.”
Aaron went silent.
“Did my father pay you?”
“No.”
“Did Vanessa?”
Another silence.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“For what?”
“To disappear.”
The answer finally gave the money a shape.
Not theft for luxury.
Silence purchased over time.
But Aaron sounded frightened, not wealthy.
“Why didn’t you disappear?”
“I did. For years.”
“What changed?”
“Your father found me.”
“Then he died.”
Aaron ended the call.
Brooks traced the number to a prepaid phone.
No location.
But Aaron had given us a major payoff.
Vanessa’s hidden husband had been receiving money connected to our family accounts.
The money was hush money.
The unanswered question was what he knew.
That afternoon, Mom identified another paper from the recovered staircase debris.
It was a photocopy of a canceled cashier’s check.
Payee: Morrow Consulting.
The endorsement on the back belonged to Aaron Vale.
He had used a business alias.
The amount was $75,000.
I noticed the date.
Two days after Dad’s death.
Vanessa had arranged another payment after the man investigating her was dead.
I sat beside Mom’s hospital bed.
“She paid him right after Dad died.”
Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“To keep him quiet.”
“About what?”
She looked toward the door.
“Maybe about what Edward learned.”
My phone buzzed.
A message from Aaron.
One line.
Your father didn’t die because of the money.
Then another.
He died because he finally understood why Vanessa married you.
I read the sentence twice.
For the first time, the secret seemed bigger than fraud, bigamy, or inheritance.
Vanessa hadn’t simply hidden a past.

According to Aaron, our marriage itself had been part of something she planned long before I knew her name.
📖 Aaron finally explained where part of the money went, but his warning transformed my marriage from a private betrayal into a plan that may have begun years earlier. 👇
