Chapter 21 - WHERE THE MONEY WENT

Rachel mapped every dollar.

All six hundred forty thousand.

The largest share went to Aaron over seven years.

Blackmail payments.

A second portion went to Owen for surveillance manipulation and archive deletion.

A third funded private investigators who tracked Aaron whenever he resurfaced.

Smaller payments went to document services, forensic labs, and lawyers.

Vanessa had not been building a secret fortune.

She had been maintaining a secret life.

That was why Mom said it wasn’t about the money.

The money was evidence of fear.

Fear that the original marriage would surface.

Fear that I would learn she targeted me partly because of Dad.

Fear that Dad’s death would be reexamined.

Fear that Aaron’s recording could be authenticated.

Rachel pointed to one final transfer.

Thirty thousand dollars.

Date: four days before Dad died.

Recipient: Owen’s consulting company.

Description: SYSTEM TEST.

We already knew about the blind spots.

This payment mattered because Owen’s system logs showed a maintenance mode activated the night Dad died.

At 11:38:52.

The corrupted frame occurred twelve seconds later.

The maintenance window was not random.

Someone activated it in real time.

“From where?” I asked.

Rachel slid over the analyst’s report.

A household tablet.

The same tablet officers found in Vanessa’s dressing room after Mom’s fall.

That tablet had been factory-reset.

But cloud backups retained device identifiers.

The forensic match was strong.

Not perfect by itself.

Strong.

Brooks now had a chain.

Motive.

Presence.

Preparation.

Surveillance manipulation.

False statements.

Post-event deletion.

And the sedative evidence.

Still no clean image of Vanessa pushing Dad.

I found myself almost grateful for that.

A single miracle video would have made the truth feel easy.

This wasn’t.

Every piece had to support the others.

Mom returned home to a temporary accessible apartment near my house rather than the mansion.

She walked with a cane.

Slowly.

Painfully.

I showed her the financial map.

She stared at Aaron’s name.

“So much money.”

“To keep him quiet.”

“And Owen.”

“Yes.”

She touched the scar near her temple.

“Edward once told me people reveal priorities by what they are willing to spend.”

“What did Vanessa spend?”

“Everything she had to protect the story she wanted you to believe.”

That sentence stayed with me.

My marriage had not been purchased.

It had been defended through money, lies, intimidation, and surveillance.

That distinction mattered.

Then Brooks called.

The lab had authenticated the crushed sedative in Dad’s blood as chemically consistent with the same manufacturer and batch distributed to the pharmacy that filled Vanessa’s prescription.

Not unique enough to prove it came from her bottle.

But no longer generic enough to dismiss.

The puzzle was nearly complete.

One piece remained.
