Chapter 13 - The Boardroom

Margaret’s arrest did not automatically save Carter Development.

The company board was furious.

Some directors blamed Margaret.

Others blamed Daniel for failing to discover the fraud sooner.

A few quietly questioned whether Claire had any business serving as trustee of the controlling shares.

Claire heard every version.

Widow.

Stay-at-home mother.

Outsider.

Inexperienced.

For months, those words would have crushed her.

Now she walked into the boardroom carrying Daniel’s audit instructions.

“I’m not here to run the company,” she told them.

The room went quiet.

“I’m here to make sure whoever does run it never has the power Margaret had.”

One director frowned.

“What exactly are you proposing?”

“Independent oversight.”

Claire placed the plan on the table.

External audits.

Two-signature requirements for major transfers.

Independent foundation directors.

Whistleblower protection.

Separation between family trusts and operating accounts.

Samuel watched from the back of the room.

Claire continued.

“Daniel found the problem because the system depended on everyone trusting one person.”

She looked around.

“That cannot happen again.”

For nearly two hours, directors questioned her.

Claire didn’t pretend to know what she didn’t know.

When they asked about development projections, she referred them to management.

When they asked about trust authority, she answered.

When they challenged the expense of forensic controls, she showed them what weak controls had already cost.

By the end of the meeting, the reform package passed.

Eight votes to one.

Afterward, Richard Vale approached Claire.

“You sound like Daniel.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She looked through the glass wall at the city below.

“Daniel spent too long trying to keep peace with his mother.”

Richard gave a small smile.

“You don’t.”

Claire thought about that.

“I did.”

Then she walked out.

Outside, Samuel was waiting with news.

The financial investigation had found one final account.

Margaret had transferred $420,000 into it after Daniel’s death.

The money came from the Carter Family Foundation.

But it hadn’t been spent.

It was still there.

Frozen by court order.

Claire immediately knew what she wanted done with it.

Every dollar would return to the foundation.

Not to the mansion.

Not to Carter Development.

To the people Margaret had taken it from.

But first, there was one final hearing.

And this time, Claire would not be there merely as Daniel Carter’s widow.

She would be there as Noah’s mother.
