Chapter 9 - The Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than Claire expected.

No marble columns.

No dramatic audience.

Just fluorescent light, wood benches, lawyers, and a judge who looked like she had heard every family lie imaginable.

Margaret sat across the aisle in navy blue.

No pearls.

No burgundy dress.

Her attorneys had transformed her into a grieving grandmother.

Claire almost admired the strategy.

Almost.

Margaret’s lawyer spoke first.

“Mrs. Carter has serious concerns about her daughter-in-law’s emotional stability.”

He showed the photograph of Margaret on the floor.

“She was physically assaulted while attempting to protect her grandson.”

Claire felt rage climb her throat.

Samuel touched her wrist.

Wait.

Margaret testified.

She described Daniel’s death.

Claire’s grief.

Arguments.

Financial confusion.

Then she described the staircase.

“Noah slipped.”

“You did not touch him?”

“Absolutely not.”

“And Claire struck you?”

“Yes.”

“Without provocation?”

Margaret paused.

“Yes.”

Samuel stood.

“Mrs. Carter, are you familiar with the security system installed at the Carter residence?”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“I’m not technical.”

“Did you order the foyer camera disconnected?”

“I may have.”

“Why?”

“Privacy.”

“Were you aware the system maintained a remote mirror?”

Margaret looked at her lawyer.

Her attorney stopped taking notes.

Samuel approached the screen.

The video began.

Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.

Claire forced herself to watch.

Margaret’s recorded voice filled the courtroom.

“Your mother should have taken you and disappeared when she had the chance.”

Then the kick.

A woman in the second row gasped.

Margaret’s attorney closed his eyes.

The video continued until Claire entered.

Until she saw Noah.

Until Margaret shouted:

“That bastard deserved it.”

Then Claire slapped her.

Samuel stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

The judge looked at Margaret.

“Mrs. Carter, did you just testify under oath that you never touched that child?”

Margaret’s lips parted.

“I—”

“Answer the question.”

Margaret whispered:

“Yes.”

The judge denied her request for control of the trust.

Then she went further.

Margaret was prohibited from contacting Claire or Noah pending the separate criminal investigation.

As deputies approached, Margaret turned toward Claire.

“You think you won?”

Claire stood still.

Margaret’s voice became sharp.

“Without me, that company collapses.”

Claire finally answered.

“Then maybe it was never as strong as Daniel thought.”

Margaret smiled strangely.

“You still don’t know what Daniel found.”

Samuel heard it.

So did Claire.

May you like

And so did the detective standing near the door.

Margaret had just confirmed that Daniel had found something.
