Chapter 6 - The Backup Margaret Forgot

Carter Development stored security and corporate backups at a private data center in Norwalk.

Daniel had personally requested access eighteen months earlier.

The reason listed in the company log was simple:

Executive security review.

Claire, Samuel, Officer Ramirez, and the company’s IT director accessed the archive together.

The first files were ordinary.

Office entrances.

Parking garages.

Conference rooms.

Then the IT director found a folder labeled RESIDENCE MIRROR.

Claire leaned forward.

“What is that?”

“A mirrored backup from the Carter mansion.”

Margaret had disabled the local foyer camera system after Daniel’s death.

But Daniel had configured the system to upload automatically to the corporate archive.

The technician entered the date of Noah’s fall.

A video loaded.

Claire stopped breathing.

There was Noah near the top of the stairs.

Margaret stood over him.

No audio at first.

Then sound came through.

Margaret’s voice.

“Your mother should have taken you and disappeared when she had the chance.”

Noah began crying.

Margaret stepped closer.

Then the kick.

Claire turned away.

She couldn’t watch the fall twice.

Samuel placed a hand on her shoulder.

Officer Ramirez did not speak.

The technician paused the video.

“That’s enough for the incident.”

Claire wiped her face.

“No. Keep looking.”

They checked earlier dates.

What they found was quieter.

And somehow more disturbing.

Margaret snatching toys from Noah.

Margaret blocking Claire’s mail from being delivered to her wing of the house.

Margaret removing envelopes from a courier and carrying them into her private office.

One envelope bore Samuel Pierce’s law-firm logo.

The certified trust notice.

Then they found a clip recorded six weeks after Daniel’s death.

Margaret stood alone in the foyer speaking on her phone.

“I need Claire to sign the waiver before she gets independent counsel.”

A pause.

“No, she doesn’t know about Harbor Ridge.”

Another pause.

Margaret’s face tightened.

“Because Daniel was stupid enough to start asking questions.”

Claire looked at Samuel.

Nobody in the room moved.

The recording continued.

“If she signs, the audit dies with him.”

Samuel immediately asked the technician to preserve the file.

Officer Ramirez stepped into the hallway to call his supervisor.

Claire remained seated.

She had spent eight months wondering whether Margaret hated her because she was grieving.

Because she was possessive of Daniel.

Because Claire came from a middle-class family and had never belonged in Margaret’s wealthy world.

Now she understood.

Margaret hadn’t merely wanted her gone.

She needed Claire to sign away the one thing Daniel had deliberately given her.

Authority.

The authority to investigate.

May you like

The authority to ask where the money went.

And the authority to expose her.
