Chapter 3 - Daniel’s Last Amendment

The next morning, Claire sat across from attorney Samuel Pierce.

His office overlooked downtown Stamford.

On the desk between them lay the document Margaret had seen on the foyer floor.

Samuel tapped the first page.

“This is an amendment to Daniel’s revocable family trust.”

Claire swallowed.

“Margaret told me there wasn’t one.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Because Daniel told me he expected her to say that.”

Claire stared at him.

Samuel opened another folder.

Eleven days before Daniel died, he had removed Margaret as successor trustee.

He had appointed Claire instead.

The trust held Daniel’s controlling interest in Carter Development, investment accounts, and the Carter mansion.

Noah was named the primary beneficiary after Claire.

Margaret had been granted something much smaller.

A lifetime monthly stipend.

Nothing more.

Claire looked up.

“She told me she owned the house.”

“She doesn’t.”

“She told me Daniel left her control of his company.”

“He didn’t.”

Claire felt almost dizzy.

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“I tried.”

Samuel slid three certified-mail receipts across the desk.

All had been delivered to the Carter mansion.

Each had Margaret Carter’s signature.

Claire’s stomach turned.

“She intercepted them.”

“It appears so.”

Samuel leaned back.

“There’s more.”

Before Daniel changed his trust, he had ordered an independent review of several Carter family accounts.

He had become concerned about unauthorized withdrawals.

“How much?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Who made them?”

Samuel’s eyes held hers.

“That’s what Daniel was trying to find out.”

Claire thought of Margaret’s face when she saw the amendment.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

She had known exactly what it was.

Samuel handed Claire a sealed envelope.

Daniel had left instructions for it to be given to her if anyone challenged the trust amendment.

Claire stared at her husband’s handwriting across the front.

For Claire. Only if necessary.

Her fingers shook.

“Can I open it?”

“Yes.”

Inside was a short letter.

Claire,

If you are reading this, someone has told you I changed nothing.

That is not true.

Trust your instincts.

Protect Noah.

And before you believe anything Mother tells you about money, ask Samuel about Harbor Ridge.

Claire read the name twice.

“Harbor Ridge?”

Samuel’s expression hardened.

“I was hoping Daniel had explained that to you.”

“He never mentioned it.”

Samuel turned toward his computer.

“Harbor Ridge Holdings LLC was formed three years ago.”

“By Daniel?”

“No.”

He looked at Claire.

“By Margaret.”

Claire’s phone rang.

Margaret.

Claire declined it.

A voicemail arrived seconds later.

Then another.

The third contained only seven words.

You need to come home. Alone.

Claire deleted nothing.

She saved every message.

Because for the first time since Daniel died, Claire wasn’t wondering whether she was imagining Margaret’s manipulation.

Daniel had seen it too.

And he had left her a trail.
