Chapter 7 - The Waiver

Margaret’s attorney arrived at Samuel Pierce’s office the next afternoon.

His name was Preston Hale.

He looked exhausted.

He placed a proposed settlement on the table.

Margaret would withdraw her challenge to Daniel’s trust.

Claire would receive $2 million immediately.

Noah would receive another $2 million in a protected account.

In return, Claire would waive any claims involving historical Carter Development transactions made before Daniel’s death.

Claire read the sentence twice.

Samuel watched her.

Preston said quietly:

“This protects everyone.”

Claire looked up.

“Everyone?”

“Your son. You. Mrs. Carter.”

“What about the missing money?”

Preston’s expression remained neutral.

“I’m not here to discuss allegations.”

Claire closed the agreement.

“Then why does this agreement mention them?”

No answer.

She pushed it back.

“No.”

Preston sighed.

“Mrs. Carter expected that response.”

“I’m sure she did.”

“She believes grief has affected your judgment.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Margaret kicked my child down a staircase.”

Preston’s eyes dropped.

“You’ve seen the recording?”

Claire realized something from the way he asked.

Margaret hadn’t told him the footage existed.

Samuel leaned forward.

“Mr. Hale, I recommend you speak with your client before making another statement.”

The meeting ended ten minutes later.

Margaret called Claire almost immediately.

“You just rejected security for your son.”

“No. I rejected hush money.”

“You arrogant little fool.”

Claire’s grip tightened around the phone.

For years, she would have apologized simply because Margaret sounded angry.

Not anymore.

“You used Daniel’s grief after his father died to control him,” Claire said. “Then you tried to use mine.”

Margaret went silent.

Claire continued.

“You took his mail. You took mine. You lied about his trust.”

“You know nothing about what I sacrificed for that family.”

“And Noah had nothing to do with any of it.”

“He is the reason you think you own everything.”

There it was.

Claire finally heard the truth beneath Margaret’s hatred.

Noah represented permanence.

As long as Claire had been Daniel’s widow, Margaret thought she could pressure her into leaving.

But Noah was Daniel’s son.

The trust’s next beneficiary.

The future Margaret could not control.

“You’re afraid of a fifteen-month-old baby,” Claire whispered.

Margaret exploded.

“I built that family!”

“No. You controlled it.”

Margaret hung up.

That evening, Preston Hale called Samuel.

Margaret had fired him.

And before ending the call, Preston said something Samuel immediately wrote down.

“Ask Claire whether Daniel ever mentioned a blue ledger.”

Claire had never heard of one.

But someone else had.

Evelyn Brooks.

The Carter family’s longtime house manager.

When Claire asked, Evelyn became pale.

“I saw Margaret burn something blue three days after Daniel died.”
