Chapter 12 - Cynthia Calls It Self-Defense

Cynthia’s husband arrived at the airport police station two hours later.

His name was Richard Langford.

He was a civil attorney.

He entered the interview room carrying a leather briefcase and an expression of controlled fury.

Not at the police.

At Cynthia.

“What happened?”

“I was provoked.”

Richard closed the door.

“There are twelve videos online.”

“He grabbed me.”

“After you tried to take someone’s phone.”

“He threatened me.”

Richard stared at her.

“What did he say?”

“Touch her and we’re done.”

“That is not a threat of violence.”

“He looked threatening.”

“He was sitting in a wheelchair.”

Cynthia folded her arms.

“You’re supposed to defend me.”

“I need facts.”

“I gave you facts.”

“No. You gave the internet video of you committing an assault.”

She began crying.

Richard did not react.

He had watched the footage during the drive.

He saw his wife take the pot.

He saw the smile.

He heard the insults.

He also saw her offer Daniel money.

“You told me you accidentally spilled a cup.”

Cynthia looked away.

“The pot slipped.”

“It did not.”

“You believe strangers over your wife?”

“I believe six camera angles.”

Her face hardened.

Then she changed tactics.

“He held my wrist. I felt trapped.”

“After you lunged at a student.”

“I was defending my privacy.”

“On an aircraft during an assault.”

Richard sat across from her.

“Do you understand whose prosthetic you damaged?”

“A veteran’s.”

“A federal witness’s.”

Cynthia stopped.

Richard continued.

“You may be facing state assault charges, federal interference charges, destruction of evidence, and civil liability.”

Her breathing became shallow.

“Fix it.”

Richard stared at her.

“What?”

“You always fix things.”

“I cannot erase video.”

“Call the veteran.”

“He is in the hospital.”

“Offer him money.”

“You already did that while being recorded.”

Cynthia pressed her palms against the table.

“This is not who I am.”

Richard leaned forward.

“It is exactly who you were when you thought no one could stop you.”

She recoiled.
