Chapter 13 - The Veteran She Had Seen Before

Richard remembered Daniel’s face.

Not from the viral video.

From a charity dinner three years earlier.

Richard and Cynthia had attended a fundraiser for wounded veterans.

Daniel spoke for seven minutes.

He asked donors to support rehabilitation programs without using injured soldiers as decorations for public sympathy.

Cynthia had complained throughout dinner.

She said the veterans made the evening depressing.

She disliked Daniel’s speech most of all.

“He makes it sound like we owe them forever.”

Richard had ignored the comment.

Now he realized Cynthia had recognized Daniel on the plane.

He returned to the interview room.

“You knew who he was.”

Cynthia’s face remained blank.

“You saw him at the veterans’ fundraiser.”

“I see a lot of people.”

“You complained about his prosthetic during the drive home.”

She looked away.

Richard felt cold.

The attack was not merely spontaneous entitlement.

Cynthia carried resentment toward disabled veterans she believed received excessive attention.

She had posted similar comments anonymously online.

Richard had discovered the account months earlier.

He never confronted her.

He told himself the comments were jokes.

Now federal investigators might find them.

“Did you post about him before the flight?” Richard asked.

Cynthia’s eyes moved toward her phone, sealed in an evidence bag.

That glance answered him.

Investigators recovered her search history.

At the gate before boarding, Cynthia had photographed Daniel from behind.

She sent the image to a private group chat.

Look who gets special boarding while the rest of us wait.

A friend replied:

At least he has a reason.

Cynthia answered:

They all use the disability card.

Another message followed after she saw her seat assignment.

I’m going to make him move.

The messages established intent before she entered the cabin.

She had not simply lost her temper.

She had chosen Daniel as a target.

Richard read the screenshots in silence.

Cynthia tried to explain.

“It was private.”

The federal agent across the table replied, “Your privacy does not change what the messages prove.”

Richard closed his briefcase.

“I’m withdrawing as your attorney.”

Cynthia stared at him.

“You can’t.”

“I’m your husband. I should never have agreed to represent you.”

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Tell the truth.”

He stood.

Cynthia grabbed his sleeve.

“Richard.”

He looked at her hand.

She released him.

“I need you.”

He answered quietly.

“Colonel Mercer needed you to leave him alone.”

👉 Cynthia’s own messages showed she targeted Daniel before boarding—and her husband walked away rather than become part of the lie.
