The old brass key still fit perfectly in my palm.

My mother stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"I never lost it."

Nobody had asked me to return it.

Because nobody expected me to come home.

I walked toward the front door.

Nobody physically stopped me.

They were too busy wondering what I already knew.

Behind me, Austin whispered one sentence.

"We're finished."
