Chapter 4 - The First Crack

Back on the porch, I stepped around Sheila.

She tried blocking me.

I brushed the spray bottle aside with my shoulder.

Nothing violent.

Just enough.

She gasped dramatically and clutched her belly.

"Oh my God!"

My mother rushed forward—not to help me.

To stop me.

"This house belongs to your brother now."

The words echoed across the quiet street.

I reached calmly into my pocket.

Pulled out the black phone.

Unlocked it.

Austin finally looked up.

The color disappeared from his face.

"Then explain why the deed still names me."

Silence.

Real silence.
