Chapter 4

He frowned.
“What’s going on here?”
Elena answered quickly.
“Just some child trying to scam her way inside.”
Arthur’s gaze shifted back to Maya.
She struggled to stand.
“Please,” she said weakly. “I’m Maya.”
Arthur stepped closer.
Then he noticed the wooden box clutched in her arms.
“Where did you get that?” he asked slowly.
Maya opened the box with trembling fingers.
The silver hummingbird caught the light.
Arthur went completely still.
His breath left him in a quiet gasp.
“That charm… I gave it to Sarah.”
Maya wiped rain from her face.
“She was my mom.”
Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs.
His eyes moved to Maya’s face.
One eye was brown.
The other was hazel, flecked with a tiny streak of gold.
The exact same rare trait he had carried his entire life.
Heterochromia.
Arthur’s knees nearly gave out.
“Sarah…” he whispered.
Maya shook her head.
“I’m Maya.”
For a moment the world seemed to narrow into silence around them.

The iron gates slid open.
