Chapter 7

Elena drove Maya away from the mansion.
But she didn’t head toward the city offices.
Instead she turned toward an empty highway.
Maya sat silently in the passenger seat.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
Elena didn’t answer.
Miles passed.
Finally the car slowed beside an abandoned bus stop surrounded by trees.
“This is where you get out,” Elena said.
Maya stared at her.
“You’re lying.”
“I told you,” Elena said calmly. “I’m practical.”
Then Maya’s phone suddenly rang.
Arthur’s name flashed across the screen.
She answered immediately.
“Hello?”
Arthur’s voice burst through the speaker.
“The test was fake! You ARE my daughter! I’m coming for you!”
Elena’s eyes widened.
She grabbed the phone and hurled it out the window into the forest.
Then she slammed her foot on the accelerator.
But she was too late.
Behind them, headlights roared around the curve.
Arthur’s Rolls-Royce.
Closing fast.
Elena panicked and jerked the wheel.
The Porsche swerved violently across the wet pavement.
The tires lost traction.

The car spun.
And slammed into a massive oak tree.
