Chapter 1 - The Kick That Sent Me Down

Vanessa’s heel struck the front leg of my walker while I was still putting my weight on it.
The aluminum frame shot sideways across the polished marble, spinning out of my reach. My hands clawed at empty air. The new joints in my hips gave way beneath me, and I pitched forward with no strength to catch myself.
My shoulder hit first.
Then my face.
The crack of my glasses against the floor echoed through the mansion foyer.
Pain exploded through my hips and traveled up my spine so fast that my vision flashed white. A thin stream of blood slipped from my nose and touched my upper lip.
Vanessa stepped closer before I could draw a full breath.
“Crawl, you ancient parasite,” she said. “Your son signed you over to me.”
One of her heels stopped beside the bandage covering my left hip. She pressed down just enough to make every muscle in my body lock.
I refused to scream.
That disappointed her.
Vanessa had always been beautiful in a way that demanded witnesses. Her fitted designer dress seemed chosen for a celebration, not an attack on a seventy-three-year-old woman recovering from double hip surgery. Every strand of her blonde hair sat perfectly in place.
She leaned toward me with a smile so polished it could have belonged in one of the charity photographs she posted every week.
“You’re just a walking corpse with a wallet.”
My fingers curled against the cold marble.
Behind her, Adrian stood halfway down the sweeping staircase, holding a thick document folder against his chest.
My only son looked horrified.
At least, that was what Vanessa believed.
His shoulders were hunched. His face was pale. He stared at me as if guilt had frozen him in place.
Two security guards stood near the front doors. They did not move. One looked at the other, but neither challenged Vanessa.
They had been hired three days earlier.
Not by me.
Vanessa had told me the guards were necessary because I had become “confused” after surgery and might wander outside. She had also dismissed my longtime housekeeper, changed the alarm code, and moved my medications into a locked cabinet.
All for my safety, she said.
The folder in Adrian’s hands contained the papers she had forced him to sign that morning.
Or at least she believed it did.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t find out?” Adrian asked.
His voice shook with exactly the right amount of fear.
Vanessa snapped one hand toward him.
“Stay out of this.”
He lowered his eyes.
I wiped the blood from my mouth with the back of my hand. The movement sent another brutal pulse through my hips, but I kept my face still.
Then I looked at the folder.
Vanessa followed my gaze.
I smiled.
It was barely a smile, but it was enough.
Her confidence faltered.
“Not power of attorney,” I said quietly. “Your execution order.”
Adrian’s fingers loosened around the folder.
Vanessa spun and grabbed it with both hands.
I reached from the floor and caught one corner.
Pain ripped through me, but I held on.
The paper cover tore between us.
The guards shifted.
Vanessa stared at me, breathing faster.
Then faint lights began moving across the tall driveway windows.
No sirens.
No engines loud enough to identify.
Just controlled reflections sliding over the marble walls.
Vanessa’s grip froze.
Adrian turned toward the front doors.
The weakness vanished from his posture.
His shoulders straightened. His mouth curved into a slow, victorious smirk that Vanessa had never seen directed at her.
“You’re about to get some great news,” he whispered.

The first vehicle stopped outside, and one of the security guards quietly reached for the radio clipped to his shoulder.
