Chapter 8 - The Recording Adrian Buried

Adrian did not deny it.
That frightened me more than any lie.
He stood beside the table where Charles’s medical file lay open, his face stripped of emotion.
“Where is the recording?” I asked.
“In a bank box.”
“How long have you had it?”
“Three years.”
The answer cut through me.
“You found evidence connected to your father’s death three years ago and said nothing.”
“I didn’t know what it proved.”
“You knew enough to hide it.”
Richard spoke from near the doors.
“He hid it because the voice belongs to Evelyn.”
The foyer erupted.
Vanessa laughed.
Margaret ordered everyone to stop speaking.
Adrian stared at Richard.
“You’ve never heard it.”
“I know what was recorded.”
“Then say it.”
Richard looked at me.
“The consultant identifies herself as Evelyn Whitmore.”
My pulse hammered.
Adrian reached into his suit and removed a small brass key.
“I never believed it was Mother.”
“But you never asked me,” I said.
“I needed to authenticate it first.”
“For three years?”
“Every expert said the voice was yours.”
The marble floor seemed to shift beneath me.
I heard my own breathing.
Vanessa watched with vicious satisfaction.
“Maybe the old woman isn’t as innocent as she looks.”
Adrian rounded on her.
“Do not speak to her.”
“Why? Because you still need her cooperative?”
Margaret took the brass key.
“Which bank?”
“First National. Box 714.”
“Who has access?”
“Me and Mother.”
“I have never rented a box there.”
“That’s why I knew someone was using your identity.”
The pattern repeated.
My signature.
My authorization codes.
My supposed bank access.
Someone had built an entire legal version of me that acted without my knowledge.
Richard tried to step toward the staircase.
The guard stopped him.
“I need my medication.”
“You can wait,” Margaret said.
He looked at me.
“You should be careful before you demand that recording. Some truths cannot be returned to silence.”
“You have relied on my silence for four years.”
The physician finished bandaging my lip and advised immediate imaging for my hips. I refused to leave until the documents were secured.
She warned me that further delay could worsen the damage.
I understood.
But if I left, Richard might regain control of the foyer through lawyers, security contacts, or simple intimidation.
I had spent decades allowing men to manage urgent matters while I recovered in another room.
Not tonight.
“Margaret,” I said, “freeze every account connected to my trust.”
Richard’s face changed.
“You cannot do that without review.”
“She can request an emergency freeze,” Margaret replied.
“It will damage legitimate companies.”
“Then those companies may explain why patient files carry Evelyn’s forged consent.”
Vanessa moved away from Richard.
Her survival instinct was redirecting itself.
“I can help.”
No one responded.
“I have emails,” she said. “Richard sent payment instructions.”
“Where?” Margaret asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
“On a private device.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You told me you destroyed it.”
“I lied.”
“Where is it?”
She looked toward the broken walker.
“Inside the left handle.”
I remembered Vanessa bringing the walker home from the rehabilitation clinic. She had insisted it was lighter and safer than the one my physical therapist recommended.
A guard retrieved it.
The left grip twisted off.
Inside was a narrow black flash drive.
Vanessa’s confidence returned.
“That proves I was collecting evidence.”
Richard laughed.
“It proves you were recording your own participation.”
The forensic accountant inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
Encrypted folders appeared.
Payments.
Audio files.
Photographs.
One folder was labeled ADRIAN.
Vanessa lunged toward the laptop.
The guards restrained her.
The accountant opened the folder.
A video began.
It showed Adrian entering Richard’s office three weeks before my surgery.
He placed Charles’s ambulance recording on the desk.
Then he said, “I’ll keep my mother quiet, but the price just doubled.”
The video froze on his face.
My son stared at the screen.
“I never said that.”
The timestamp showed a date when Adrian had been in Chicago.
Vanessa smiled.

“Prove it.”
